    This book is a generous gift on behalf of the author who has given an open and frank account of her personal and professional development as the ‘Dog Calmer’. It will appeal to anyone who has an interest in understanding dogs, whether they are just starting out on their journey or are further along the path to dog wisdom. The reader is introduced to the many dog personalities that have been both a part of the author’s family life and her source of growth and learning. Her personal story which is humorous, sometimes shocking and deeply moving at times enriches the factual learning. It also provides a ray of hope to anyone who is struggling with a particular dog behaviour problem by encouraging them to see mistakes, or miss takes, as opportunities for learning and by offering clearly laid out methods and exercises as a way forward. A wide range of problems and potential solutions are explained in a manner which is easy to read and comprehend, where the dog handler is called upon to step up and become a pack leader who is confident, calm and active in experimenting to find solutions. It is suggested that if we can stop talking long enough to listen, then we will be able to hear what our dog is communicating to us and we will become aware of what we are saying back to them through our body language. It is an inspiring read that challenges the reader to develop their own inner core of dog knowledge where we can start to become teachers in our own interactions with all dogs and their owners. Also we need to identify our own ethical limitations, to accept the situations we cannot change and to put the work into the ones that can be changed for the better. In essence we are asked to follow our heart which through learning, will surely lead to self-forgiveness and a profound level of mutual respect, and eternal gratitude towards all the wonderful animals we are fortunate to meet on our journey through life.
