About this ebook

When Hali was a child, he'd held his father's absences against him. Now that he was Lord Warden, he understood. When the God-Emperor called, he must answer or suffer the compulsion.

Duty takes place in Sangrar, the setting for the Tale of Ages. It begins in the year 4632, ninety-four years before the God-Emperor exiles Hali.

Officially, I was laid off and have a severance package to prove it, but really, it was an early retirement. Very early, I was just shy of fifty. When the time came to make the cut, I gladly volunteered. I’d had enough. Now, after three years of writing, rewriting and rewriting, I’m dipping my toe in commercial waters. I haven’t sold a word, not yet, but then again, I haven’t tried until now. Don't worry, I’m no starving artist. I provided twenty-five years of leadership as an IT executive with a Fortune 200 company. That’s a quarter century of corporate moments, some of which have already found homes in short stories. I was nationally known, in insurance technology circles, which is to say entirely unknown, led an organization commanding a nine figure budget not counting pennies, and spoke to thousands at industry events.THE CURSE OF ARVYL’S FOLLY is my first full length work seeking an audience since my fourth grade classmates were subjected to “Augusta the Dragon” forty-two years ago. After leaving Mrs. Hamilton’s classroom, I attended Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, where I devoured fantasy and science fiction classics and became an avid gamer on my way to graduating with degrees in psychology and sociology and a minor in King Arthur. Now, I live in Cleveland Heights, Ohio and my seven year old son Neil lives on the east coast. I named my cats, China and Rider, from a Grateful Dead set list, and I still like dragons. My collection is large, Neil ran out of fingers and toes just counting the winged ornaments dangling from my mantel, and very cheesy.

Van, stay away from the water, Cymara warned their four year-old son.

Yes, Mama, but Halivan stayed close to the Taris watching branches from last night’s storm float down river towards Belgrith Harbor.

You worry too much, Hali Halvyl said to his wife. The two of them were lying on his cloak half a dozen paces from the water next to a basket filled with treats from the Keep’s kitchen. He’d laid out his cloak with the yellow side down so they could lie on the soft fur lining. In all the legions, there wasn’t another cloak like it. No one else wore yellow. No one else wore a cloak embroidered with a mailed fist holding a scepter tipped with the seven sided star of Sangrithar. In all the legions, no one stood above him. He was Sangrithar’s Lord Warden, the legions’ leader, and answered only to the God-Emperor, his wife and his conscience. Halivan’s a Sangritharian born and bred. The blood of Thar who was Umbar, Lord of Sea and Storm runs in his veins. He’s got nothing to fear from the water – Solare burn me, he could swim almost before he could walk.

I’m his mother, Hali, Cymara chided. I’m allowed to worry. I’m supposed to worry. Let me do my job.

Aye, aye, Mistress Warden. He may have commanded the God-Emperor’s legions, but not his own home. Cymara laid claim to that title. Against her soft, blue-eyed gaze he was helpless and she knew it. He’d fallen under her spell the moment he’d spotted her at the Devotee gathering fourteen years ago, when her beauty had shone through her porcelain princess mask. It hadn’t taken them long to remove masks and more. When Hali told his father that he’d told Cymara his true name, Halimir was livid until he said he intended to propose. A grown man, Hali didn’t need his father’s permission, but all things being equal, he’d rather have it than not. Fortunately, Halimir thought the Catheris, Cymara’s family, a good fit for House Halvyl and gave his blessing after calming down. Three years later (the first delay, he’d gotten cold feet, the next two weren’t his fault), they’d married. Next week, they would celebrate their eleventh anniversary.

Cymara had the fair skin of a noble and hair
