    About The Author

    Forward

I count it a great honor and privilege to be asked to write these few lines as a forward to Dr. Marty Tharp’s book. I first met Marty approximately 18 years ago when we were both guest speakers at a conference in England and since then I have been inspired and encouraged again and again with his vision to reach out to children and youth of Northern Ireland. The Tharp family have spared no effort in their endeavors to influence these young people for good by holding concerts in schools right across the religious divide.

I certainly have been amazed and thrilled to see how the doors in these schools have been opened and indeed I sat in one of the recent school concerts and saw for myself the incredible response. In fact on one occasion I had to fight back the tears when I watched Marty communicate the love of God so effectively.

The Tharp family’s dedication and commitment in coming all the way from America and putting up with the inconvenience of living in a cramped coach for months, bears witness to the love of God in their hearts for the young people.

This latest book of Marty’s brings out wonderful treasures of truths and is full of inspiration and spiritual insight. I have no doubt that the reader will find it challenging, informative and edifying.

    Introduction

The Urim and the Thummim, has always been one of those subjects that has mystified the theologians of every generation. I have acquired quite an extensive library of antiquarian books over the past twenty years of our ministry in Great Britain, and from my research into bible commentaries and noted authors, it would seem that someone in the 16th century wrote a single paragraph on the subject, and every one else has simply copied it.

The level of conjecture and supposition put forward in regard to this Old Testament conundrum, literally staggers the imagination! I must admit that I fell quite easily into the category of presumption along with a multitude of others. But after several weeks of soul searching and concentrated supplication before the Father, I came to this decision: I would rather make the arduous trek up the treacherous slopes of wisdom’s Holy mountain of inspiration, to be allowed to swim in the cool clear waters of revelation, no matter how briefly, than to be satisfied, languishing in the fertile valley of sedentary reproduction, emulation, and duplication! I do not want to be content to float aimlessly down the insipid stream of desultoriness, accepting without question the exercising of the gift of suspicion along with a vast throng of theological clones.

Therefore, I have chosen the more precarious route of exploration, choosing to accept the challenge of the naturally instinctive God given spiritual curiosity, for I am convinced that God has not withheld from us the true meaning of something so incredibly consequential as the Urim and the Thummim.

The Urim and the Thummim held an unprecedented amount of influence in the affairs of the children of Israel, for they are mentioned on several occasions in regard to their primary assignment, that of judgement and revelation.

The definition of The Urim and The Thummim, Lights and Perfection, evokes within itself an inordinate measure of curiosity, for lights, or illumination, suggests at least a modicum of acquired knowledge and comprehension concerning spiritual matters.

My hope is that the reading of this book will inspire you to a greater measure of cogitation in regard to The Urim and the Thummim, those legendary items of mythical proportions,

    Chapter 1

    Sundry And Divers

"God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom He hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also He made the worlds; Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;" (Hebrews 1:1-3).

The term used in this first chapter of the book of Hebrews is one which brings into focus a specific avenue by which God conveyed His will and His plan to those whose lives He has chosen to use as tools of the Kingdom of Heaven; *Sundry times and **divers manners, Polumeroôs," pol-oo-mer'-oce; Is an adverb from a compound of G4183 and G3313; in many portions, that is, variously as to time and agency (piecemeal):—at sundry times. (Strongs)

**Polutropoôs,pol-oot-rop'-oce; An An adverb from a compound of G4183 and G5158; in many ways, that is, variously as to method or form:—in divers manners.

In other words, In bits and pieces and a variety of methods. Yet He also chose one of those methods to be by the mouth of the Prophets

"God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,"

The first record of someone being called a prophet is found in Genesis 20, when Abram had journeyed to Gerar and allowing fear to replace his common sense for the second time (the first time was in Genesis 12, in Egypt). Abram introduced his wife as his sister, fearing that her beauty would cause the king of that country to kill him and take Sarai by force.

    I have heard a wide variety of sermons dealing with this subject, and in nearly every single instance the passage in Genesis 12 is referred to and his actions excused;

"And it came to pass, when he was come near to enter into Egypt, that he said unto Sarai his wife, Behold now, I know that thou art a fair woman to look upon: Therefore it shall come to pass, when the Egyptians shall see thee, that they shall say, This is his wife: and they will kill me, but they will save thee alive. Say, I pray thee, thou art my sister: that it may be well with me for thy sake; and my soul shall live because of thee" (Genesis 12:11-13).

Even though Sarai actually was his half sister, the daughter of his father but not his mother, the fact still remains that she was his wife.

I find it ludicrous that we feel the need to explain away any form of desultoriness on the part of God’s cherished warriors of the faith, attempting to soften the effect of an outright act of less than heroic self-preservation committed by one such as Father Abraham, who was called The friend of God! The simple truth of the matter is, if God chooses to bare the most intimate details of a man’s life, the heroic as well as the cowardly, far be it from us to attempt to excuse or whitewash that information. Rather, let us learn the mind of God as he extricates Abraham from both situations, choosing to preserve the promised Abrahamic lineage by protecting the sacrosanct relationship between husband and wife.

We must never forget that the law of love is the foundation of the government of God, the happiness of all intelligent which is dependant on their ability to come into perfect accord with its great principles of righteousness. God desires from all His creatures the service of love, service that springs from an appreciation of His character. He takes no pleasure in a forced obedience, and to all He grants freedom of will, that they may render Him their voluntary service.

It is primarily the second indiscretion that I would like to focus our attention on, for it is the very first instance of the use of the title Prophet, and it was attributed specifically to Abraham. Not by Abimelech who received the stern warning from God in a dream, but rather by God Himself in referring to an act of undeserving grace bestowed on him. For although this man assumed he was guiltless because he had failed to touch her, God confirmed that it was actually His own merciful intervention that had preserved his life.

"And God said unto him in a
