About this ebook

"John Cena: The Unauthorized Biography of The WWE Superstar" is a compelling exploration of John Cena's rise to fame in WWE and the powerful affection and animosity he elicits from different generations of WWE fans today.

Drawing insight and expectations from exclusive interviews with WWE insiders and professional wrestling observers, this gripping and completely unauthorized look inside the WWE also explores how WWE executives, including Vince McMahon, may revamp Cena's character before giving him the ultimate push at WrestleMania 28 against The Rock.

Incorporating segments from his bestselling title "The Rock vs. John Cena: The Real Story Behind The WWE Rivalry," nationally acclaimed author and former E! Entertainment Television host Michael Essany takes an in-depth look at who exactly loves and hates John Cena (and why).

    Part 1: Born in Character

    Divided. Contentious. Hostile. Increasingly uncivilized.

On the surface, one could easily believe those words are being used to describe the contemporary national political landscape between Democrats and Republicans.

In reality, however, such descriptions are perhaps best reserved to explain how WWE fans coexist when John Cena enters an arena.

Cena has always envisioned himself as the good guy, so to speak, admits one WWE source. When he was a kid, he had a homemade WWE championship. He worshiped Hulk Hogan. He has all-American sports hero in his DNA.

But for all of his clean-cut actions both inside and outside the ring, perhaps no so-called good-guy in the history of the WWE has ever drawn such powerfully mixed heat and palpably negative emotion from fans, 50% of whom dictate 100% of Cena's character.

It’s a PG program, so I know a lot of kids watch our programming, Cena once admitted in an interview, adding that the WWE's youngest viewers look at Cena as their hero.

In a world where role models are fleeting, Cena says, I know where I’m at. I know WWE looks at me to be that guy. I was a team leader in college. I know what responsibilities you assume when you become a leader.

And Cena has been a leader in the WWE since he showed up.

    A ‘Cenation’ is Born

Even though John Cena’s on-screen character has evolved substantially since his earliest days with the organization, there has been one constant with Cena that both admirers and detractors alike concede: Cena is, unquestionably, the hardest working superstar of his generation.

Cena has principally credited his work ethics to both a love of the business and his childhood passion to one day become WWE Champion.

I always wanted to do it, Cena said of his wrestling ambitions in a 2009 interview with Men’s Fitness magazine, "but I didn't know the outlet to do it. I remembered from documentaries like ‘Beyond the Mat’ that there were minor leagues in wrestling, and if you wanted to do it, you just had to look around for a school. The joke of jokes is when I went to California, a good friend of mine goes, 'Hey, I'm training to be a wrestler. You can come down, I'll train you.' Twenty minutes away from my house in Massachusetts was the School of Killer Kowalsky, the famous wrestler who trained Triple H. It was so secretive; I never knew it was there. I had
