About this ebook

The Bible has much to say about dreams, but nowhere is the concept put forward more succintly than in the story of Joseph. No serious student of the Bible can omit the study of God's ability to bring victory out of the seemingly futile existence of a boy whose only fault was having a dream. Come with me as we discover a God who can turn our failures into victories and bitter defeats into joy!

    "For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed; Then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction, That he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man" (Job 33:14-16).

    "For a dream cometh through the multitude of business; and a fool’s voice is known by multitude of words" (Ecclesiastes 5:3).

    "The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream; and he that hath my word, let him speak my word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat? Saith the Lord" (Jeremiah 23:28).

    Acknowledgments

    I owe a debt of gratitude to my family for putting up with my lack of social graces while attempting to write The Death Burial and Resurrection of a Dream, which has been in my spirit for over twenty years. I have laid claim to the title; THE WORLD’S MOST PROLIFIC PROCRASTINATOR!

    With the encouragement of my wife, Sharon, and with the help of Kathleen Hoffman, (who makes certain that my sentence structure punctuation is correct,) I have finally written what I procrastinated about for so many years.

    About The Author

    INTRODUCTION

    The story of Joseph is one that will speak to the heart of anyone who has ever felt the excitement of actually knowing that they have heard from God, only to find that the Christian community and sometimes those closest to us often fail to share our enthusiasm. I have discovered as Joseph did, that when God speaks to you in such a way as to include others, it won’t be long before you will find yourself viewed with a suspicious skepticism, as if you have just landed on a space ship from Mars!

    For most of my Christian life I have either quoted or heard quoted the scripture that says:

    "Your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions" (Joel 2:28b).

    As of late I have found which category I fit solidly into. I can’t seem to stop dreaming! Much like Joseph, even when God gives you detailed information that there is no possibility of any other source of discovery, those dreams have been solidly rejected.

    Joseph had no hidden agenda, he just knew what God had spoken clearly into his spirit, and he had the mistaken idea that his dreams would receive an enthusiastic welcome, only to find that their concept of what the future held certainly did not coincide with his dreams.

    Joseph spent thirteen of the most discouraging years that anyone could ever imagine. I am convinced that Joseph never gave up the idea that it was truly God who had spoken to him through his dreams, it was just that there was nothing whatsoever he could do about convincing anyone that these dreams were really from God, and therefore non-negotiable! God had not changed his mind, but there was just no point in dwelling on what the primary subjects of the dreams have soundly rejected. We have the dubious honor of being the only creatures on planet Earth who are capable of being totally blinded by our own desires regardless of the warnings delivered by a just and Holy God, whose only interest is that we might find ourselves squarely centered in the perfect will and plan of God.

    The purpose for Joseph’s dreams was to bring about deliverance from an enemy that they could not see, nor even knew existed. However, God has never promised us that we would be privy to a clear view of the future, only that if we will dare to trust Him with what we do know, the day will soon come when all will be revealed!

    I am convinced that it was not necessary for these brothers to demonstrate such an animosity toward one whose excitement about the discovery of a future event via his dreams would not allow him to be silent! Unfortunately, if you want to make an instant enemy, try to convince someone that you have heard from God, and what you’ve heard affects their future and it doesn’t fit their agenda.

    Joseph spent thirteen years waiting on God while his dreams had plenty of time to die and be buried in the confines of a prison cell! There is a saying that goes like this;

    "The darkest hour is just before the dawn."

    My friend, it may be your darkest hour, your dreams may have been rejected, maybe the light of day has not shown in your dungeon for far too long! But when you least expect it remember that Joseph was ready when;

    "They brought him hastily out of the dungeon: and he shaved himself, and changed his raiment, and came to Pharaoh" (Genesis 41:14b).

    Then listen carefully as God vindicates you and your dreams!

    "And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Forasmuch as God hath showed thee all this, there is none so discreet and wise as thou art: Thou shalt be over my house, and according unto thy word shall all my people be ruled: only in the throne will I be greater than thou. And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, See, I have set thee over all the land of Egypt. And Pharaoh took off his ring from his hand, and put it upon Joseph’s hand, and arrayed him in vestures of fine linen, and put a Gold chain about his neck:" (Genesis 41:39-42).

    Chapter One

    THE DREAMER

    "And Jacob dwelt in the land wherein his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan. These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report. Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colors. And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him. And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more. And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed: For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf. And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? Or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words. And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me. And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth? And his brethren envied him: but his father observed the saying" (Gen. 37:2-11).

    Everyone has the ability to understand that if you do not have a dream or a goal, life can become dull and listless. Without something you are shooting at, or working toward, life often becomes unbearable because you have nothing to look forward to. We are told that when people retire, the number one killer is not old age, it is boredom. When you have nothing to do, the mind slowly becomes dull. Men who have worked all their lives find that when they retire from a daily regimen, the body quickly begins to deteriorate from a lack of activity.

    Many women have invested their lives in the process of raising children while getting a husband off to work, filling a daily regimen with the preparation of meals, laundry and housework. At the end of each day they have found little time for themselves. Then all too soon the hour arrives when all the children are finally gone and busy establishing a life of their own. That’s when mom often winds up with what is termed empty nest syndrome: they still have a need to be needed, but unfortunately, there have been no contingency plans made for how to utilize the free time they find themselves with when the children are gone, and often the problem is amplified by the loss of a husband.

    People who fail to set attainable goals for themselves contingent on their eventual retirement, often find themselves sitting down in a rocking chair with a remote control in their hand, watching the television until they die. The lethargic inactivity is caused by the absence of a dream. If God can give us a dream that will keep us active, we will find life more enjoyable. The psychologists and physicians tell us that if we are participating in something worthwhile, life could be extended anywhere from ten to twenty years.

    We need to have goals, something worth looking forward to or some place we are going with some kind of activity we enjoy doing. Longevity is totally dependent on the body being involved in some kind of physical and mental activity.

    It doesn’t matter what your age is, if you don’t have some long range goals that you are working toward, it won’t be long before you lose sight of where you’re going.

    If you are going to start on a trip across country into unfamiliar territory, get a map! If you don’t have the brains to plan where you are going, outline it and have some check points, you will be in a perpetual state of confusion!

    Without fear of contradiction, it is the same thing in the church world. Many churches are dying on the vine simply because they have no vision or long range goals, therefore they are not going anywhere! This is what I find appalling! They simply cannot understand why the congregation doesn’t respond to the calls for support. But support what? What are the goals or long range plans? The pat answer is; We’ve got to be soul winners! Sounds good, doesn’t it? But how are we going to win souls? Is there an active visitation program or missions outreach? Are there planned activities for every age group? Is the ministry available for counseling or advice? Are there any teaching classes? Again the answer generally given is; Be faithful to Church, pay your tithes, and pray for a lost and dying world!

    In other words, there is no vision, no road map, no goals, and no future! Put more simply, they have no dream!

    We expect someone to get behind the pulpit and excite us, You get everything going, Pastor, and we will back you up! How do we back him up? By saying Amen! Or, Alright I’m here, now bless me?

    The fact is, whether we serve in a ministerial or lay position, we need dreams! God is no respecter of persons. Do you know what He is a respecter of? Dreams!

    The problem is simple; God can’t speak to us if we are not listening! It is as mundane as that. Have you ever been to a prayer meeting where everybody was praying as if they would be interrupted if they were to pause? Yet everyone went away feeling good because they had prayed non-stop for an hour. That’s a monologue, not a dialogue. Johnny Carson did a monologue for years on late night television in America. He talked, we listened. God doesn’t want a monologue; He desires to communicate with His children. That’s called dialogue. It is time for the church to have a dialogue with God.

    Having never heard the audible voice of God, I have always wanted to. I have however, endeavored to be sensitive to the Spirit so that I can determine when God is speaking to me, and what He is trying to say. I learned early in my Christian life that I dislike people who insist on doing all the talking, so when I communicate with my heavenly Father, I keep that in mind!

    I would rather see a person sitting in silence, than to hear them launch into a shop worn monologue full of clichés. Please, take some good advice: If you are going to do anything, open the Book and wait upon God. Please don’t misunderstand me, there is nothing wrong with those who choose to talk to the Lord, but why not listen to see what He is going to say from time to time.

    I have found on many occasions that there are scriptures in the Bible I have read so many times that I have lost count, and I could never understand what they were talking about until I dared to enter into a dialogue with God while engaged in a prayer meeting. Then suddenly, I have discovered truths that literally jumped off the page at me, for God had entered into the dialogue with me! The Bible, His most profound communication tool, spoke to me.

    The subject that I am dealing with has catapulted my mind into a scriptural realm that I had never dreamed possible. I am understanding things about the story of Joseph and the power of a dream that had never occurred to me.

    A couple of years ago I preached a series of messages on the Old Testament Tabernacle, and as a means of demonstrating the configuration of the pathway God had provided from the people to Himself, I took six chairs and used them to show my concept of what the Bible has to say about the New Testament Church, revealed through the vessels of the Tabernacle. It was during the preparation for that particular series of sermons that God opened my understanding for the first time about various aspects of the types and shadows! Things that are now obvious to me were at the time beyond my comprehension. It opened my mind to a revelation of God’s word that was beyond my scope of understanding. I have made some amazing discoveries since then.

    For years I have been making this statement; God did not write two books, called The Old and The New Testament, God only wrote one book called the Bible! He wrote it in two languages, but only one book. King James made the division between Malachi and Matthew, but the fact is, the New Testament doesn’t start until the book of Acts. Matthew, Mark, Luke and John deal with Old Testament laws that Jesus was living under, and that is what made the Jews so angry! Jesus dealt with them on their own terms. He went to their church and He dealt with their law. He had the unmitigated gall to insist that under the law they already knew, they were rejecting the Divine Son of the Living God.

    Before you ever build a house, you must have a foundation. In fact, a foundation is necessary if you are going to build anything. It would be impossible to convince me that God has not put down a foundation for the New Testament church, the crowning achievement of a risen Savior. From the very beginning of time, God’s plan was to teach the New Testament church, in the pages of the Old Testament. The Old Testament types and shadows were our examples to teach us principles to live by.

    I find the Old Testament absolutely astounding! I have used its myriad illustrations in my sermons and teaching for years! It is filled with prophetic adumbration, and it is apropos for teaching a wide variety of subjects in the New Testament Church.

    I preach a lot out of the Old Testament, but I have always brought it in line with things that I saw in the New Testament. I fully understand that God, through Old Testament chronology and the Pentateuch, was laying out for us a divine, perfect picture of the New Testament Church in types and shadows. Ezekiel said; it was like a wheel in the middle of a wheel.

    God presents himself as the motivating force, or inner wheel, that propels the outer wheel. Anybody who knows anything about gear ratios will know what a wheel in the middle of a wheel is. The smaller wheel will create a force that is impossible to achieve any other way. Have you ever seen a ten speed bicycle? There is more than one set of gears, and when you are at the largest one, the wheels are turning very slow even though you are peddling rapidly. When you finally gear down to that smallest wheel, you will find yourself moving swiftly down the road! It’s because you have A wheel in the middle of a wheel.

    Several times before we get to Genesis 37, God gave us sketches of the New Testament church, but when you get to chapter 37, God begins to lay paint on the canvas. His intentions are to give us the perfect picture of how we are supposed to act and feel. If He could use a man like Joseph, who didn’t have the benefit of the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit, yet by his actions demonstrated a confidence and trust in God, we have no excuse whatsoever. We have an inner force dwelling in us, and if we will activate our faith, there is no power under heaven that can stop us from being the best that God said we could be. That knowledge is why I am intrigued by the life of Joseph.

    The Bible says;

    "Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report."

    Remember, I’m giving you a picture of the New Testament church encapsulated in the story of Joseph. His story teaches us how to have a goal in life, and to attain that goal, thereby obtaining our dreams.

    Before we progress any further with this incomparable story of Joseph, look at the New Testament
