All characters and events in this story are fictional. Any resemblance to anyone living or dead is purely coincidental. While some of the places mentioned actually exist, they are used in an entirely fictional manner.

    Prologue

There were four of them, so different from each other, yet each seeking an escape from pasts that haunted them. That February they all showed up for a respite on the windswept white beaches of Sanibel, a small affluent island near Fort Myers, Florida. Over the years many artists have tried to capture its natural beauty in verse or paint, but few have succeeded. One visit to the laidback lifestyle, turquoise waters and mile after mile of wild nature preserves provides an unforgettable healing tonic to even the most bitter and disenfranchised.

Their four lives were first drawn together by a passion for seashells. For walking for hours on the warm sandy shores gathering some of the finest mollusk skeletons to be found in the world. At first they’d just nod and smile at each other, acknowledging a certain zaniness that accompanies collecting something of little value or use in a technologically driven modern society. Before long they began conversing about the weather, the abundance of shells, the water temperature and other safe subjects. The conversations were usually brief and a nice break from the isolation of their individual small but colorful modest dwellings at the Sea Shell Cottages on the western side of the island. When they weren’t shelling, they’d read, watch television, pedal the over twenty miles of bike trails or think at length about how things might have gone differently. Not one of them had any desire for public attention or the anxiety that comes from being associated with a cold blooded murder. But one of the four would become the victim of a vicious killing shortly before daylight at a beach on a cool February morning that looked too perfect for such a horrible tragedy.

    Chapter 1

    Mary

I’m Mary and one of the last conversations I had with my new friends on Sanibel was over coffee at the Over Easy Café. We often went there because Liz could take Lucy, her cute rescue mutt, along to sit at the outside patio dining area. That woman loved that dog more than a lot of people love their kids. Liz reminded me of the cheerleaders
