    About The Author

    Forward

This is a book of poetry. Poetry, in the dictionary, is a type of writing that achieves its effects by rhythm, sound patterns, and energy. The effect of Brother Marty’s poetry is the deep emotion of love- love for God and the Bible, as well as love for family and friends. His poetry evokes a new appreciation for these things and what I have felt in reading you will feel, powerfully as well, coming straight from Marty’s heart. And, because he is also Marty, you’ll discover that sense of humor and mischievousness we all love, extrapolating about his computer, a coffee pot, and other absolute necessities.

As Marty’s Pastor, I am always amazed at the abundance of talent God has given him. This book has given me new insight into the depth of his spiritual life, and the quality of his relationship to God, which extends far beyond his talent.

Thanks Marty, for revealing your heart in these wonderful verses. I am convinced that every reader will have their capacity for love and laughter dramatically influenced.

    Introduction

I have discovered that for me, there are some things which can only be articulated by using the medium of poetry. It has been my lifelong desire to put into written form some of the more painful aspects of my own life as a child. The divorce of my mom and dad was not an event which I relished, neither was the alcoholism of my father.

It has taken a lifetime of attempting to eradicate some of the memories of the more debilitating aspects of that portion of my life, and at the same time find comfort in the knowledge that God is now, and has always been in control.

In the twelve books which I have written to date, I have included only a few bits and pieces of some events, but never have I been able to deal with those years more succinctly than in this small volume which you hold in your hand.

I have observed that poetry is an amazing tool which will allow us to express things which are simply too painful or too private to deal with adequately. It is also provides us a means to share portions of events in the lives of our children, as well as others whose lives have intertwined with ours.

My wife and I have spent hours alternately either laughing or crying as I finished each poem individually. My prayer is not that you will consider this book as a literary classic, but rather that you may be able to identify with some aspect of that which I have felt compelled to write about.

    Chapter 1

    Personal

    Paradise

I held her close and listened to her soft and gentle snore,

Counting all the times I’ve thought; I just can’t love her more.

The years have passed and I have found the only thing I fear,

Is she may tire of my embrace, my need to hold her near.

I lay thinking of the day when I sent roses to the door,

I came home that night to see her sitting on the floor!

Her eyes were red and puffy from the tears which she had cried,

Whatever has gone wrong with her? She had me mystified.

I thought someone died, as I tried to calm her down,

The tears flowed so profusely, I thought we both might drown!

But when her tears subsided, she finally told me why,

She held me close still sobbing, It’s the roses! That made me cry!

I discovered on that day, I could buy sugar rather cheap,

Just send her flowers or some small gift, that will make her weep.

I softly touched her face as I remembered how she cried,

When we saw Shenandoah, and in it someone died.

Her tenderness amazes me, in silly little things,

The way she gets all dewy eyed, bout a bird with a broken wing!

I thought about the day, when underneath my wheel,

Her little pet French poodle ran, oh my did she squeal!

She could not stop crying, though I tried to sympathize,

It was near two months before she looked me in the eyes.

Ah but she forgave me, we’d had a near miss before,

Every time I tried to park the car, she bolted from the door.

I knew I was forgiven, when a smile would cross her face,

She would crawl up in my lap, and relish my embrace.

Does she know how hopeless I would be without that smile?

If she wakes up I’ll be here, just to hold her for a while.

It only seems like yesterday, she captured my poor heart,

As the years have flown I find, I love her more than at the start.

I thought about the day when I fell down on one knee,

I looked up in those eyes and said, will you marry me?

We were in Las Vegas, walking on a busy street,

Everybody grinned at us when she held me oh so sweet.

Yes! I want to marry you, she answered so quickly,

Just the thoughts of that fine day, sends shivers over me!

I pulled her ever closer, while she slept in peaceful bliss,

Please Lord won’t you give me, ten thousand nights like this!

What did I ever do for God, to give me one like you?

I feel truly blessed, I hope and pray that you do too.

I want to wake her up and tell her just how much I care,

But she’s in such peaceful slumber, I’m content to hold her there.

As I drift off in peaceful sleep and we start to harmonize,

It may be noise to you my friend, to me its paradise!

    * * * * *

    My Wife

Never have I met a woman, looking quite as neat,

But when you stop and look again, this girl has two left feet.

Now she will tell you anything, that you don’t need to know,

She’ll likely tell you anyway, whether you are friend or foe.

She’s never met a stranger, wherever she may roam,

But when I like her best is when it’s time to take her home.

This woman can’t remember what she’s done with anything,

Everything she owns, oh my, she even lost her ring.

Her purse may turn up later, that’s just the way it goes,

Where she’s left it this time, only she and heaven knows!

She misplaced our passports when we prepared to fly,

She lost all our money! till it was time to buy!

Has anyone seen the car keys, Lord knows where they could be,

She swears she saw me with them last, you must be kidding me!

She’s lost her shoes, her coat, her bag, and all else not tied down,

Everything seems to turn up, as a smile wipes out the frown.

An entire bag of jewelry, she hid the thing someplace,

I know it’s just a thought, but why not buy a jewelry case?

One day when she got the urge, to throw some things away,

She will always thank the Lord, a second look, it pays!

All the things she said, had mysteriously disappeared,

Was there inside a candy box, safe from the crooks she feared!

She had opened up the candy box to have a
