    CHAPTER 01: MY TSUNAMI

Andrew watched as his kindred soul’s chest rose and fell, calm and serene. Her mind was silent, muscles relaxed as she slept. He’d spent many nights lying awake as Gabriella endured nightmare after nightmare. Maybe tonight would be different. Maybe tonight they’d both get the rest they desperately needed.

With a murmured word, the lights went out. Andrew settled under the covers, trying not to wake Gabriella while she slept so soundly. The whisper of footsteps on the other side of their door faded the later the hour until the air hummed with silence. He closed his eyes, and sleep pulled him under.

The heat radiating from the flaming wall was a blessed relief after traversing over the frozen tundra of the Lands of Ether. Fire raced over the magical barrier, keeping trespassers out and what they longed for inside. Safeguarded.

Weak. She’s so weak. Tired. She must push forward. Everyone’s survival depends on her. She’ll sacrifice it all for Earth. She stretches a hand forward, holding her breath. Blisters bubble on her skin before it catches fire. Screams rip and tear their way from her throat.

Andrew woke with a jerk, his heart pounding out a jagged rhythm. Gabriella’s dream had invaded his mind as they slept. He wished he knew why she was being forced to suffer the vivid dreams the Sight forced upon her. Perhaps it was because she hadn’t been able to figure out exactly what they meant. Yet. After witnessing several of these visions through their mental bond, Andrew couldn’t decipher the disparate dreams either. The savage world Gabriella had envisioned time and again was one Andrew had never seen before.

With his arm wrapped snuggly around her waist, Andrew observed her dream that had quickly morphed into a terrifying nightmare. Gabriella’s muscles were tense, her brow creased, and silver tears seeped from beneath her closed eyelids as she witnessed a future Zola had foreseen when the prophetess was still alive.

As much as Andrew wanted to wake his kindred soul, it would only be postponing the inevitable. Gabriella would have no choice but to suffer through the Sight.

Andrew has lived for thousands of years—so long that numerous memories have faded with age. But through all that time, he never fathomed how empty his life had actually been, and then Gabriella, the Illuminator, his Ella, tore through his world like a tsunami crashing down on shore. When the waters receded, she left everything out of order and upside down. And Andrew loved every second of it. No one had ever made him feel the way she had.

When they first met, Andrew didn’t know what was happening to him. Gabriella was the soothing, volant wind that caught his sails, and all he could do was prepare for the wild ride. It wasn’t until he kissed her in the underground lab that Andrew finally understood she was his on some visceral level. He couldn’t get enough of her.

Gabriella moaned, the lament brimming with agony. Andrew gently palmed her cheek as she fisted the sheets and curled in on herself. He brushed sweaty strands of hair away from her face as she continued to struggle under the weight of the Sight.

Another dream? Ehno asked through their mental link.

Yes, Andrew answered, apologizing for waking him. Sometimes Andrew became so invested in Gabriella that he forgot to block the other Halos from his head, though Ehno wasn’t a Halo anymore. His status had been elevated to a prophet after the voting and awakening ceremonies two weeks previous. For whatever reason, the bond they had shared due to being Halos together didn’t disappear like it should have.

Same dream? Ehno asked, pulling Andrew from his thoughts.

Same, but different. They’re becoming more frequent and violent, Andrew informed. I’m worried.

    It’ll work out, Ehno soothed.

Perhaps Ehno was right, but that didn’t mean Andrew wanted to watch while Gabriella dealt with the Sight, all alone inside her head.

Gabriella abruptly sat up, chest heaving, green eyes bright and terrified. I know how to fix it, she gasped.

She didn’t have to explain what it was; through their mental bond, Andrew already knew she meant the dimensional tear.

Andrew, we don’t have much time, she said after inhaling several calming breaths.

Words and images flew through her mind so quickly and out of any coherent order that he couldn’t unravel her tangled thoughts.

Slow down, Andrew said gently. I can’t keep up.

Her eyes met his. The Gods hid the key, she said breathlessly. Like a master key. Not only can it open the gates between dimensions, but it can also close them. She smiled, excitement glittering in her eyes. I’ll be able to fix the dimensional tear before it consumes the rest of Earth. Relief radiated in her voice.

She scooted off the bed and headed to the closet.

Trying his best to hide the skepticism leaking into his own thoughts, Andrew said, calmly, Ella, you should sleep more first. You’re exhausted, and so am I.

She pivoted back around with a kind smile curling her lips. You don’t think it exists. It was a statement.

    I didn’t say that.

    But you were thinking it.

Maybe, Andrew relented, knowing he could never keep anything from her. But it does sound too good to be true.

Perhaps, she said quietly, reaching back into the closet and sifting through her clothes. But you and I both know that you never would’ve questioned Zola.

Of course she was right, so he didn’t dispute the claim.

Besides, getting the key won’t be easy. All these dreams I’ve been having? They’re just glimpses of what I’ll have to go through to get it.

Not keen on her having to face those nightmares in real life, Andrew said, Let’s say it is true. Then you’ll need all the rest you can get. Now come back to bed.

Gabriella picked out a set of clothes from the closet and moved to the vanity. Her gaze met Andrew’s in the mirror’s reflection.

Please, he silently added with a come-hither smirk.

A devilish grin spread across her face. If I go back to bed now, she purred, voice low and sultry, there won’t be any sleeping or rest involved.

Andrew swallowed convulsively and had to readjust himself under the covers. I don’t see what the problem is.

She laughed, and a beautiful blush swept up her neck and colored her cheeks. Stop it, she chastised as he sent her mental pictures of exactly what he wanted to do to her until they were both blissed out in a state of nirvana.

A knock on their door pulled him from his naughty thoughts. Gabriella brushed a hand through her hair before answering.

Lucia strode in, coughing theatrically and waving a hand in front of her nose. I could smell the sexual tension all the way down the hall.

The blush returned to Gabriella’s cheeks, and Andrew grinned.

That’s what you get for skulking around outside our door in the middle of the night, Gabriella scolded playfully.

What did you expect when Ehno woke me, saying you know where the Key of Pearl is located?

    Key of Pearl? Gabriella asked.

I thought that was just a myth, Andrew said, his eyebrows
