About this ebook

The purpose of this book is to point to a specific and perhaps unique passage of Scripture which can provide a structure or a template for the early and strategic development in the preaching and teaching of God's Word. Two questions drive this Biblical exploration. How does a new preacher begin to understand the process and responsibility for the task at hand? For a busy, seasoned pastor, where is a good Biblical place to start in the mentoring of new preachers?

    Acknowledgements

My deepest level of gratitude goes to my parents Rev. Garth Hyde and Norma Lee Hyde. My father’s lifetime of preaching has always been deeply embedded in the glorious Word of God. My mother consistently demonstrates her desire to engage with the Living Word. As children racing back into the house after school, we would often catch her sitting on the couch with her well-worn Bible in hand. To these two individuals I owe much honor.

I must acknowledge the other great mentors and writers I have walked with on this journey. The shadows of many of their thoughts are contained within and may never be able to be retraced in endnotes.

Ultimately, I thank my Lord for giving us his wonderful revelation. He is worthy!

    Why Preach?

There have been preachers for centuries. That ought to make you feel good and make you feel uneasy simultaneously. It ought to make you feel good because you have a vast tradition in which to stand and an enormous backlog of preaching material from which to learn and from which to borrow. It ought to make you feel uneasy because after all these many centuries of preaching what new thing can you preach? This question might leave you in despair—unless you preach from the living Word of God. If you believe that the Word of God—emanating from before creation, the very Word which spoke the universe into existence, the very Word which commanded Moses to write these things down so that future generations could know Him (Exodus 34:27) —is still living and active, that must mean that the Divine initiator of the Word is still speaking! And if he is still speaking, we have much to learn from him. And what each of us learns about him should be shared.

God speaks. God speaks in a myriad of ways: trees clap their hands, mountains bow down and—in the marvelous poetic imagery of believers—nature itself is an ambassador of God. Then there is the direct and sometimes audible voice of God. Some hear it and believe. Others hear it and flee. And then there is the
