After completing my studies I began offering psychotherapy that is solution focused for those with addictions and other relationship problems. While working as a Registered Practical Nurse I became concerned about high cholesterol contributing to heart attacks to I began teaching vegetarian cooking classes. My students wanted to me write a cookbook, so in 2011 I wrote a cookbook entitled “Vegetarian Cooking Today co-authored with Linda Butt. My business “Choose A Lifestyle” was started to help people lower cholesterol by eating a vegetarian diet and then developed into doing Psychotherapy. Preface

The definition of health and wellness is multifaceted and includes the Great Physician’s perfect will for each person. It involves one’s freedom of choice and working to maintain a life of wellness; it means more than being free of disease in the body and mind. Wellness is a harmonious balance within the body, mind, and spirit with God as the Great Conductor. The purpose of this research is to provide the best outcome for one’s health and relationships. It will provide new insights into health and how our environmental influences play a role. An awareness and knowledge of Biblical principles for health and wellness gives a counsellee a handle for behaviour modification and the ability to achieve healthier outcomes.

Today many suffering with poor mental health are searching for relief and healing. They are asking why so much suffering because they desire to make sense of it from their perspective. The answer is complex because physical illness can cause mental health problems and mental health problems can cause psychosomatic illnesses. Sickness within families affects everyone’s mental health and when they come for counselling, they expect answers and helpful advice. The need has inspired this research of Biblical health principles so they can be used for mental health intervention and prevention. It is also a resourceful contribution to the research already done on Biblical health.

Some peer-review articles reveal that writers are anticipating a change in how counselling will take place in the future. Chwalisz (2008) wrote an article entitled, The Future of Counseling Psychology: Improving quality of life for persons with chronic health issues. In it, Chwalisz proposed working with a framework for counselling interventions that would meet chronic health needs.

What one thinks and believes about the Bible and its teachings in regards to health is vital to being motivated to follow its principles. Lubinski (2009) states, social scientists and practitioners cannot afford to neglect cognitive ability when modeling epidemiological and health care phenomena. One’s thinking and motivation for change plays an important role in maintaining good health: Compliance has to do with at least two psychological components: a ‘can do’ competency component (ability) and a ‘will do’ motivational component (conscientiousness) (Lubinski, 2009). The freedom of choice is everyone’s power, which is under utilized to achieve positive outcomes. To understand the mystery behind health and wellness, one needs to have an awareness and appreciation for the spiritual battle that is taking place in the mind of everyone.

    Introduction

The professional fields of medicine, psychology, and religion have contributed to achieving health and wellness. The goal is to understand the meaning of Biblical health and how it impacts on the counselling experience. Biblical health principles that enlace the counselling process can help clients achieve better health. From a Biblical view point the meaning of health and wellness is multifaceted; it is wrapped up with God's perfect will for each individual depending on man's submission to His will and whatever God allows to glorify His name.

Selective prominent Biblical health principles will be researched for their health benefits and practical spiritual teachings and new ways of thinking, eating, and relating will be introduced. Various counselling situations will be presented with matching conceptualization cases and treatment plans, and Biblical health principles will be introduced as appropriate in each case. Collaboration between professionals can lead to a more positive outcome for the client because their subjective and objective contributions are valuable. The counsellor's goal is to follow best practice requirements and achieve the best outcome for the client.

Specific health principles have been chosen that emphasize the mental, emotional and spiritual dimensions. Counsellors and mental health professionals can use these principles to be a conduit that enlightens, educates, encourages, and supports those needing their help. The process of making choices for changes is the client's responsibility so they can learn to 'own' their part in the healing process. Biblical counselling builds confidence in God's perfect remedy, which has inspired, healed, and given hope through the centuries.

    Chapter 1

    Who Are You?

Finding true meaning in life seems to elude many, even though they desire a purposeful lifestyle. The objective of this chapter is to explore the two philosophies about how man came into this world so one can develop a meaningful life. Beliefs about the origin of life can affect the ability to find meaning and personal identity. According to Fleet (2007), "each person's existence depends upon finding his or her own unique meaning in life, and this 'useful life' flows from co-operation with and
