The Ark Project Book 3:
The Final Action
3349 AD - Summer Delights
The Life Pod decided it would land on the surface of the sole planet in the star's system. It altered its trajectory and entered the atmosphere.
As this was an emergency, full deceleration procedures had not been applied; which meant that the small craft had to rely on the atmosphere to help slow it down. This in turn made the hull glow white hot. The Pod felt like it was going to shake itself apart, though it did leave a splendid orange and red trail of spent material in its wake. Eventually, by the use of stabilisation thrusters, the emergency vessel achieved a stable cruising speed.
The Life Pod continued to use the thrusters to guide itself down to a landing site, which was chosen by an analysis of its sensor readings. Despite the chosen site being fairly bit windy, the Life Pod extended its three landing struts and landed safely and securely. With a quick analysis of the atmosphere (all good), it opened its airlock doors and informed its sole passenger that she may vacate the Life Pod if she so wished. Several seconds later a woman stumbled out of the door, fell to her knees and promptly threw up.
Even though the Life Pod had only been equipped with rudimentary artificial intelligence, it was quite proud of itself.
Melinda looked up at her surroundings and groaned. An hour earlier she had been sipping a rich black coffee and catching up on reviewing her field notes; while the star ship she was comfortably sat in cruised through the galaxy at many times the speed of light.
Now she was cold, disoriented and angry, indignant even. How could a ship just fail like that? Where was everyone else? And why had the Life Pod gone and landed here?
She got up, turned towards the tiny life saving spaceship and scowled at it. Then she felt embarrassed at her own feelings, the little thing had just saved her life. Not really sure why, she smiled and nodded at it.
Melinda decided to inspect her wider surroundings by walking in a circle around the cylindrical Life Pod. They had landed high up, very high up, on top of an incredibly tall building in fact. In the distance she could make out mountains and a vast ring of forest. Immediately surrounding the building she was on was a city, or what might once have been a city. There was certainly no obvious activity or signs of life down below, though it was hard to tell. There were low-lying clouds all around the tall building; it must have been at least an order of magnitude taller than its counterparts which made up the surrounding urban conglomeration.
