About this ebook

God gave Israel the greatest leader ever known. In failing to follow God’s man, the famous congregation betrayed a lack of faith in God himself. His great glory revealed among them is unparalleled in history. Yet now we remember them as the church in the wilderness, wandering outside God’s promised blessings. What can we learn of leadership and the special relationship between pastor and people?

Do these sound like things you can and should love about your pastor:
He thinks he's God's gift to the church
He is a Bible thumper
He's always stirring things up
He's asking for trouble
He routinely leads the church Into difficulties
He avoids me
He preaches hard
His ranting makes me sick
His wife is, shall we say, "different"
He asks the impossible
He rules over me
He's said some things he shouldn't have said
And he always preaches the same thing

These were the things about Moses that caused all the murmuring. And they are the complaints about and best qualities of great leaders today. More positively stated:
He is a gift from God
He loves the Bible
The Holy Spirit works in and through him
He is separated from the world
He leads by faith
He gives himself to prayer and the Word
He preaches truth and mercy
He hates sin
He loves his family
He has vision
He rules well
He bears his responsibility with grace
And he preaches the word of God

If you know a leader like this, then, stand by God's man!

A Leader Like Moses - Mark Wallace

What can you expect from this book?

It’s about good pastors, shepherds, and the qualities we should appreciate in them. I wrote it mainly for my family whose spiritual welfare is my greatest concern. And I wrote it for the pastors who have been a blessing to me.

    Here’s a quick summary:

God gave Israel the greatest leader ever known. In failing to follow God’s man, the famous congregation betrayed a lack of faith in God himself. His great glory revealed among them is unparalleled in history. Yet now we remember them as the church in the wilderness, wandering outside God’s promised blessings.

God gives pastors to his people today. But many church members have never seriously examined this special relationship. Pastors need faithful followers who understand and appreciate their ministry. God is still able, but his glory is absent from many churches because the people do not follow his man.

Are you overlooking a great leader, a leader like Moses? This book will help you to love your pastor more and stand by God’s man!

    And here’s one pastor’s response:

I received a copy of your book and read it straight through. It came to me in a very strategic time. But, is that not how our God works? The struggles of the ministry have been pressing in and your book was a special encouragement to be steadfast, unmovable always abounding in the work of the Lord.

Thank you for your insight into the life and ministry of the pastor. Thank you for standing for and with YOUR Pastor. May God be pleased to give us more Aarons and Hurs. May God bless you richly in His great grace.

    Preface

This book examines our attitudes toward our pastors through a series of applications drawn from the history of Moses’ leading of Israel. Most people have problems from time to time submitting to God-given authority. It should be admitted that none of us is above ingratitude, disloyalty, envy, and every form of pettiness that may come between us and our pastor. We cannot be ignorant of the Devil’s penchant for pitting the sheep against the shepherd, nor can we trust the flesh to behave itself charitably toward spiritual authority. As God’s people we must walk circumspectly, in times of trial and triumph, and guard our hearts concerning those in authority.

Some people let problems in the past hinder right relationships in the present. They may have been wounded by wolves that crept into the church unawares. Paul warned that such would rise up even from among the church leaders. Some have been hurt by a terrible failing of a Christian leader. In the church at Antioch, Paul withstood Peter to the face, publicly, for his failure to treat the church members properly. And some have seen the closest friendships wrecked over honest disagreements that defied the desires for reconciliation among the best of men. There was sharp contention even between men like Paul, the great apostle, and Barnabas, the son of consolation.

Thank God there are shepherds who will stand between us and the wolves. Good leaders may sometimes fail, but the Apostle Peter’s failure at Antioch did not diminish his authority as an elder. And the Bible does not focus on fixing the blame on Paul or Barnabas; there is simply the fact of the contention and separation, and the focus immediately returns to the great work for the Lord that each went on to do.

Likewise, we can move beyond the most troubling experiences by keeping a proper perspective on the eternal purposes of the work of the church. A Biblical attitude toward the pastor is essential. We must be willing to trust again, setting self preservation aside for the sake of the work of the ministry.

My prayer is that this book will challenge Christians to search their hearts and their Bibles in order to grow in their love and appreciation for their pastors. I also pray that it will be a blessing to pastors who faithfully lead their churches in accordance with and in submission to the pure and preserved word of God. I pray that this book brings honor to the Lord Jesus Christ and strengthens his churches. Finally, I pray it is a curse to pastors falsely so called who do not submit themselves to the authority of the Bible. May the Lord set us in safety from them (Psalm 12).

    Introduction

Hosea 12:13 - And by a prophet the LORD brought Israel out of Egypt, and by a prophet was he preserved.

God gave his people Israel a prophet to deliver them from bondage and lead them to the land of promise. But Israel had spiritual problems. They often murmured against that prophet. Murmuring in the camp bubbled up from the pit whenever something of great importance was happening. And it cost Israel dearly. Many were destroyed.

The Holy Spirit recorded those events to instruct the church. Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come. (1 Corinthians 10:11)

Failure to follow God’s man subverts the eternal purposes God is working through his church. And it happens in churches all the time. Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall. There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. (1 Corinthians 10:12-13) One way of escape is to develop a greater appreciation for the pastor God has given us. When we do, we will enjoy much more of the promises of God to his people.

In the murmuring of Israel against Moses, we find many of the common complaints about pastors today. But when we examine these complaints, we find that the very things for which pastors are so maligned are the things that should endear them to us.

Let me tell you about my pastor. He thinks he is God’s gift to the church. He is a Bible thumper. He is always stirring things up in the congregation and asking for trouble from the world. He routinely leads the church into difficult situations. I am convinced that he avoids me. He preaches so hard and rants against seemingly harmless pleasures. His wife is, shall we say, different. He often asks the impossible. It is hard to submit to his ruling over me. There are times that he’s said some
