For many years, I was a very productive, hard working businessman. I did physical outdoor work and loved it. I was also a very active athlete who enjoyed being young, physically and spiritually. It all came crashing down when I developed osteoarthritis at the age of 46. I tried many things to find relief and rejuvenate my body. I was frustrated and depressed. Doctors told me that my arthritis could be managed, but that it wouldn't get any better. Well IT DID GET BETTER, because I did something about it. I experimented and found methods that have improved my life considerably. I write to share my methods with others so that they can improve their lives as well. I have found a second career as an advocate, and educator. Hopefully I can turn my arthritis into a positive for others, and contribute to the improvement of healthcare and society.

PREFACE
This book is dedicated to anyone who is trying to cope with and overcome arthritis or any other debilitating condition.
I know some people will disagree with this book, but if I have learned anything in my life, it’s that I must write from my heart. I truly believe in my heart and soul that this writing can, and will, help many millions around the globe.
This book isn’t about making some political statement; I’m not advocating unregulated abuse of marijuana. It is about people’s health and healing aching bodies. It is about extending years of active, independent life and reducing disability. It is about spreading knowledge and advocating for alternative medicine.
COPING
Happiness is not being pained in the body or troubled in the mind
─Thomas Jefferson
There was a time not so long ago when I could barely walk or move easily at all. I was in crisis time of my life. My workhorse legs were failing me. I was in my mid-40s, and my livelihood was being taken from me.
For years I had my own business. First it was Fingerlakes Landscape, and later Cook’s Property Maintenance. I took care of some fine properties. It was a robust work: mowing, bush and shrub work, tree work—it was man’s work and an honest living. I loved it. When I started this business, I did not intend on being in it for the long haul. I knew that I could not work that strenuously forever. I sought out a few sales jobs during the offseason, but nothing gave me the satisfaction of being my own boss. I could read to my son every morning, work outdoors, and still make a living.
With the business climate being what it is in my state, you really need to pick up a lot of work to make it pay to have employees. Doing so dilutes quality. The workman’s comp, insurance, and tax regulations are burdensome. I liked being a sole proprietor. Quality control, time, and money were all under my control. I worked hard and provided for my family, but the work was wearing my body down. I might add that I enjoyed cross-country running, competitive basketball, and being young—physically and spiritually.
One day, I had to cut a run short because of time constraints. Once in a while, to compensate for a short run, I would do vigorous deep knee bends at the end of the run. This time, I really worked it hard. I was never quite the same after that day. I noticed a slight, but lingering pain in my quad. It was no big deal; it didn’t stop me from doing anything. Still, it wouldn’t go away.
Like everyone else, I would have acute problems from
