    Someone is Missing

Come on, buddy, Sir Tristan shouted over his shoulder as the training grounds came into view. You’ll meet the others and we’ll show you off to Grandmaster Svend.

Rowan nodded as Sir Payton slapped him on the shoulder, urging him to keep up. The trio increased their pace, eager to rest after two weeks on the road. The sun was beating down on their exposed heads, making them sweat in the summer’s heat, but they didn’t mind that so much. What they did mind was the complete and total lack of horses. Sir Payton and Sir Tristan were knights, not lowly peasants. They preferred to ride during their missions, and not just because they often wore heavy armor. Riding was both required and fun, and both knights didn’t like having to walk on this journey.

But horses didn’t do well in mines, the very mines where Rowan had first met the two knights. He and dozens of other young men had been held in the mines and forced to work for no pay while being given only the smallest bit of food and water. Moldy bread and stale water was the best that could be hoped for, and that was on a good day. Most days they had to be content with what they could scrounge up in the dark depths of the silver mines.

Then Sir Tristan the Red and Sir Payton the Blue had arrived. The two knights had been sent by Queen Delmarie to the mines with orders to free the young slaves and put someone noble in charge of the silver mines. The realm of St. Andrews needed the silver, but slavery was banned. Miners must be paid a fair wage, were entitled to decent and ample meals, and could not be kidnapped and forced to work against their will.

While Tristan and Payton had been setting things right, there had been a cave in. Rowan and several other boys had found themselves trapped and running out of air. Rowan alone had dug them all out, saving lives and proving his courage. This had impressed the knights and Rowan had been invited to join the famed Knights of St. Andrews.

Of course, Rowan had no training at all. He couldn’t wield a sword or draw a bow. He couldn’t even sit a horse without falling off. Until he had these basic skills, he would be referred to as Squire Rowan. Knighthood had to be earned, but Rowan was up to the challenge. It was better than the mines and something Rowan was certain he could be good at.

Rowan was still dreaming of the day when he would be called Sir Rowan when Tristan slapped him on the shoulder. Rowan jumped but managed not to yelp.

Look, Tristan said as he waved an arm toward the buildings rising up through the trees ahead. The training grounds. And beyond that, the castle.

The trio increased their pace, ignoring tired muscles and sore feet. The training grounds and its barracks were almost right in front of them. The ground was littered with targets, dummies, and other training equipment, but it was all wisely set up and very logical. The barracks itself was only a single story tall. It was shaped like a cube but was missing one side, allowing a small courtyard to be framed in its center. The courtyard was filled with trees, benches, and even a few pillows scattered across the grass. It was entirely unlike the rest of the training grounds.

What’s with the courtyard? Rowan asked as he waved a hand toward the little refuge.

Payton shrugged. We might be knights, but we’re still human. We need to relax a little, have some time to ourselves. That courtyard is for us to use when we’re not on duty, if we like. As long as we’re not actually on duty, we can be sure that we’ll be left alone.

Except in an emergency, Tristan chimed in.

But they are few and far between. Payton slid his shield off his shoulder and stretched carefully. His muscles could use a hot soak in a heated tub.

Rowan was still gazing around. He took note of several structures made of rope and wood. They looked almost like spider webs. What are those?

Tristan followed the boy’s gaze. We need to practice agility and speed, and we need to practice often. See the little bells? He waited until Rowan nodded before he went on. We need to be able to get through the ropes without ringing a bell. It’s not easy when there are four bells on each rope.

Not easy? Looks like it’s not possible. Rowan’s eyes were a little wide as he studied the complex patterns of rope strung across the wooden structures. You’re not going to expect me to do that, are you?

One day. Payton pulled open one of the heavy doors leading into the barracks. But you’ll need plenty of training first. Training you’ll get from us and from the Grandmaster. We’re not going to throw you in there before you’re ready, so stop worrying.

Rowan tried to relax as Tristan ushered him inside. But now he had another concern. Do you think Grandmaster Svend will like me? he asked quietly.

Tristan laughed out loud as he steered Rowan into a large room lined with beds. Of course he’ll like you. He’s been searching for brave young men to mold into knights. You fit the bill. He’s been hoping to fill the barracks, so one more squire will be more than welcome.

How many squires do you have? The room looked empty right now, but there were twelve beds in this room.

Right now? Just you and Gabriel. He’ll likely be up at the castle with Sir Jayden and Sir Kallum right now. You’ll meet Gabriel later. Tristan pulled open another door to reveal another dozen beds. One of these beds had clearly been slept in. Since there’s only two of you, you can each have an entire room to yourselves. As we add squires, you’ll have to share. I hope that’s okay.

    Now Rowan
