About this ebook

KILLER INSTINCT is the first in Zoë Sharp’s highly acclaimed Charlotte ‘Charlie’ Fox crime thriller series, now available in e-pub format for the first time, complete with Foreword by Lee Child, two previously deleted scenes, Meet Charlie Fox and Meet Zoë Sharp extras, an excerpt from the next Charlie Fox novel – RIOT ACT – and a bonus excerpt from Brett Battles’ Jonathan Quinn novella, BECOMING QUINN.

‘Susie Hollins may have been no great shakes as a karaoke singer, but I didn’t think that was enough reason for anyone to want to kill her.’

Charlie Fox makes a living teaching self-defence to women in a quiet northern English city. It makes best use of the deadly skills she picked up after being kicked out of army Special Forces training for reasons she prefers not to go into. So, when Susie Hollins is found dead hours after she foolishly takes on Charlie at the New Adelphi Club, Charlie knows it’s only a matter of time before the police come calling. What they don’t tell her is that Hollins is the latest victim of a homicidal rapist stalking the local area.

Charlie finds herself drawn closer to the crime when the New Adelphi’s enigmatic owner, Marc Quinn, offers her a job working security at the club. Viewed as an outsider by the existing all-male team, her suspicion that there’s a link between the club and a serial killer doesn’t exactly endear her to anyone. Charlie has always taught her students that it’s better to run than to stand and fight, But when the killer starts taking a very personal interest, it’s clear he isn’t going to give her that option ...

Praise for KILLER INSTINCT and Charlie Fox

"Charlie looks like a made-for-TV model, with her red hair and motorcycle leathers, but Sharp means business. The bloody bar fights are bloody brilliant, and Charlie’s skills are both formidable and for real." Marilyn Stasio, New York Times

"Sharp deserves a genre all her own − if you are just discovering Zoë Sharp then you are in for a real treat." Jon Jordan, Crimespree Magazine

"Charlotte (Charlie) Fox is one of the most vivid and engaging heroines ever to swagger onto the pages of a book. Where Charlie goes, thrills follow." Tess Gerritsen

"Ill-tempered, aggressive and borderline psychotic, Fox is also compassionate, introspective and highly principled: arguably one of the most enigmatic − and coolest − heroines in contemporary genre fiction." Paul Goat Allen, Chicago Tribune

Good grief. What a boring book. Cliches, predictable plot, bad writing, pointless rambling, wasted words, lack of perception and insight, flat characters with nothing interesting to say and do and characters I don't care about. (Notice I didn't say 'characters I don't like', ie, I don't have to like characters to care about what happens to them).

On top of that, I hate it when a character in the begininng of a book is just the same at the end of it..."

I picked up this book based on the blurb provided by Lee Childs. Since I enjoy mysteries, it was a good bet I'd like it. I did.

Killer Instinct is a solid first book the Charlie Fox series.

What I liked: the writing style. The series is set in England and the author, Zoe Sharp, is Bristish. Some of the terms I was unfamiliar with but I enjoyed learning different phrasings. Ms Sharp didn't create a card board cut-put heroine. Charley is all too human. Her backstory was intriguing and not fully explained which added to the mystery. The novel flowed well and the world building was okay.

What I didn't like: there wasn't much not to like. I was getting a bit tense waiting for more information on Charlie's past but it unfolded the way it needed to

As a testament to Killer Instinct, I immediately bought the next book in the series, Riot Act.

This is one of those books with a very strong female lead. There's nothing wrong with that at all, but for some reason I couldn't connect with Charlie Fox as she seemed to have a chip on her shoulder. I found her annoying. This book features too much on motorbikes and self defence. I know these are two elements in the story but at times it was sounding like a dummies guide to self defence. The story was generally okay but confusing at times.

A decent debut thriller, though not quite as exciting as expected based on Lee Child's forward. It's a story of a woman who teaches self-defense classes to other women who accidentally gets mixed up in the doings of a serial rapist and murderer. Would read more in the Charlie Fox series, but not going out of my way to do so.

Good start to what is described as an excellent series. Charlie is quite chippy, in the British sense but sturdy enough to absorb the cuts and bruises she frequently collects. Story nothing special but moves well. We learn a little more about antique "bikes" than most of us would prefer but it does create a unique biker flair for Charlie and her friends. flair

Completed 4/19, generously rated two stars. First in a series about Charlie Fox, ex Brit army, discharged after reporting rape by 4 fellow soldiers, now a self-defense instructor, and in this book a part-time bouncer. Very plot driven story involving drugs and rape. Charlie goes on a bit about being a victim, whines about the lack of support from her mother, as well as issues with her father (why do I think these will continue to be major themes for the next several books at least (?) Didn't find the supporting characters, nor Charlie for that matter, particularly interesting, and by the time we got to the climactic scene I was tired of all the wordy descriptions of the kicks, feints, blocks etc. The writing was pretty decent, and I'm sure subsequent books are better than this debut, but there wasn't enough here to bring me back.

Killer Instinct is the first of the Charlie Fox mysteries.Charlotte, Charlie, is ex-British special forces. Charlie is a no frills sort of gal. She's smart, tough, and rides a motorcycle. The author writes great action and believable characters. Here's a brief synopsis...Charlie's friend Clare is attacked during karaoke night. Charlie fends off the attack and gets offered a job as a bouncer. She needs the money and takes the job. A serial rapist is on the prowl and Charlie suspects a link between the nightclub and the rapist, investigates, and nearly becomes a victim herself. There's no big mystery about the identity of the rapist. But the action and suspense will keep you turning pages.I read books 2-5 before reading Killer Instinct. It was hard for me to find a copy of this book because it it's out of print. If you live in the US and want a copy, you're gonna have to dig. Some people are asking outrageous prices. Anyways, I finally found an old used library copy for around $60. This book should be republished.I will be passing Killer Instinct around to my friends.
