Restoring the 1964-1966 Mustang with Integrity - Ralph Bumpus
INTRODUCTION
Image No. 2Classic car lovers around the world would never cite a list of the most desirable classic American cars without mentioning the Ford Motor Company’s Mustang. But, not just any Mustang; the reference would always be to the first few years of Mustang production, 1964 to 1966.
The first generation of the Ford Mustang legacy technically covered the production years from 1964 through 1973. However, when automobile lovers are asked what years truly represent the first generation of the Ford Mustang, 1964 to 1966 is the most popular reply.
With the 50th anniversary of the Mustang’s introduction coming in 2014, there has been a tremendous amount of renewed attention given to the early model years, 1964 to 1966. And those three years are what this book has concentrated on; the true beginnings.
Automotive Ingenuity Personified
Nothing defines the American automotive ingenuity like the Ford Motor Company and nothing defines the Ford Motor Company like the Mustang. Without any doubt, from the introduction of the first 1964 Mustang in April 1964 in New York, up to the present time, car enthusiasts have had a love affair with this car. Entire industries have evolved around this one make of automobile. Those industries would include Mustang magazines, Mustang only road races, Mustang customizing, Mustang detailing, Mustang updates and reporting, Mustang car clubs, specialized Mustang replacement parts dealers, uniquely trained and specialized Mustang restoration and rebuilding shops and even Mustang museums.
There are car repair specialists that have honed their Mustang interest into careers exclusively dedicated to specialized Mustang mechanical maintenance and upkeep. Rare is there a talented automotive mechanic who would pass up a chance to work on a classic Ford Mustang.
Recently, even the Ford Motor Company began helping Mustang devotees maintain and restore their vehicles with the production of new Mustang replacement parts and kits. Some of these kits are reproduced parts that will fit the original Mustang models but use modern fabrics and technology. Some reproduction kits are referred to as Restomods, a term for modernized restoration. Restomods produce the look and feel of an original Mustang but are not original or authentic antique Mustangs.
Every year that passes sees fewer and fewer original Mustangs being available for either sale or restorations. This is due to vehicle misuse, accidents and other mishaps. At the same time, owners of classic Mustang cars are proudly investing their time and money keeping their Mustangs operational. These owners demonstrate a sense of personal achievement in their efforts to keep Mustang history alive.
There is even more devotion to originality when these people are the original owners or if there has been a family history with the original cars being passed down from one generation to the next.
Know When You Need Help – and Where to Find it
Not all Mustang owners know enough to attempt major repairs on their own and readily admit their lack of the mechanical skills and expertise needed for a restoration project. Rather than make any costly mistakes, they will rightfully engage the services of
