Foreword from my Children
David - Third Son
Even though one member of my family is lost and confused through Parkinsonism, I know deep down in my heart that he will return to my arms. My father gave 100% in everything he did; he is my hero and taught me to cherish family above all. I am proud to be the son of a Marine, and to be the grandson of a WWII Air Force pilot.
If I learned anything from this book, it is that family is forever. Reading this book made me understand that life is not all about you. Life depends on how much you want to succeed.
If I was told five years ago that my dad would someday write a book about his life, I would have laughed until I peed my pants. Still, I am amazed that my parents raised five kids.
When I was growing up, my dad was the type of guy who was always there for his family. Every football, baseball, soccer and volleyball game, you could count on my dad being there, rooting you on. Looking back now, I can see that I was spoiled beyond belief. I overlooked every little detail that life was giving to me.
My parents sacrificed so much in their lives. I am ashamed and disgusted of myself for asking for so much. I now understand why my parents did the things they did. I am thankful that my father was a lot more tolerant than his father. I am thankful that my father spanked my ass when I misbehaved. I now understand that it was for my own good, and not because my father was mean.
Every one of us kids were spoiled, and lived a rather good childhood. I love my brothers and sister to death, and wouldn’t have them any other way.
My parents’ legacy lives inside of me, and I am proud to call myself a Quintanilla. My father’s heart and soul is inscribed in this book, and his legacy will reside within it, as well as within his children.
Family will stick by you to the end, and never give up on you. Sometimes they can get mad at you, or even storm out of the house. But I will stand with them against anything that comes our way. I know one day that my father’s book will change this world.
Kathryn
I have read many books through the years, dealing with various topics. None of the books, though, has had as much impact on me as this one. I and my father have always had different views on things, but not once have I ever tried to view things from his perspective.
Reading this book, I now understand how he went through hell, and came out a man who I can proudly say is my father. During my adolescent years, I held a personal grudge against my parents. I viewed them as people who didn’t understand, people who had an easy life. I can now say with certainty that I was wrong, 110% wrong. It was me who didn’t understand, the one with the easy life. I didn’t care to look past the façade my parents were putting on, the fake smile they wore. Reading this book, I now see it. I see the enormous weight that has unfairly been placed on their slumped shoulders, their bent backs.
Now that I truly understand what they have been through, I’m ready to take that weight onto me. To let them enjoy themselves, like they were supposed to from the very beginning. I won’t let my parents ever feel again like they failed us, because they haven’t. I’m glad my father made the decisions he did, because if he had not, this family wouldn’t be as strong as it is today. It is a giant concrete block, crunching every problem we face, one step at a time.
Because of my father, I have come to appreciate the little things in life, like how much a hug can do, or just a few encouraging words. My father was a man who whenever he fell down, just brushed himself off, said a few curse words, and tried it again with a more positive outlook than before. I wish I was as strong as him, but as long as he’s here with me, still fighting for a better life, then I promise to God himself that I’ll be fighting right alongside him. LOVE YOU, DADDY.
Kevin - Second Son
My father is my foundation. I have always been curious about my dad’s past life, and it’s wonderful that I finally understand it all through reading this book. Most of what I knew about my dad’s childhood was revealed to me during his backyard drunken episodes, a sentimental couch gathering, or by my mother. There is so much more to my father than I expected.
Amidst the rough exterior, there is a soft underlining in my dad that’s rarely seen by anyone but those he truly loves. When people ask me why I work so hard, and how it is that I am so driven in life, I say it’s because of my family. More specifically, it’s because of my father. He has always pushed me to try my hardest, mentally and physically. He’s instilled in me a sense of pride and dedication that’s helped me become a better man.
When people are asked what they fear most in life, a lot respond with physical entities such as needles, spiders, snakes or rats. My greatest fear in life is letting my family down. Unlike my younger siblings, my older brother and I were old enough to know what struggles my parents went through. I remember every fight my parents had, the way they would act when they would drink too much and too often, seeing my mother walk out of the house crying, and listening to the door slam as she passed.
This was all a reality to me, something that I remember vividly and constantly. I believe adversity makes an individual stronger; this is why I made a promise to myself to become the strongest I can be for my family. My father always made it a point to stress the importance of family. He would always tell me; family comes first. That is a value I have held onto, and will continue to demonstrate.
I’m more than excited that my father has written an autobiography. He’s always been reserved in the way he expresses himself, so it’s a relief to finally see him reveal what lies underneath. I’m grateful for everything my father has done for me and this family. I know I wouldn’t be the man I am today if it wasn’t for him.
James - Youngest Son
Hey, dad and readers. I could talk on and on about how much my family has struggled, and how we are still holding together against all the odds, but no family is perfect, everyone has struggles.
I think this book my dad has written is great. If you think about it, you probably haven’t read many autobiographies. He’s a war veteran, a hero, and an awesome dad. I think this book is an inspiration to all who believe in hard work, and all the people who are underappreciated. I hope you readers love this book as much as I love my dad. I hope you love him too.
Childhood
I was born on October 11, 1956, in a small rural Texas town by the name of Raymondville. With a population of less than 9,000, Raymondville was a typical town located within the deep southwest Rio Grande Valley, a town lost in time, and still divided by the racial and economic prejudices between rich white farmers and poor sharecropper Mexican-American families. Like a lot of small towns in Texas, it had one single road, lined on both sides by small shops. It gave one the feeling of Mayberry RFD, a television series in the sixties.
A lot of people were born in rural Texas, so that didn’t
