Getting up early on a day off wasn't James favorite thing to do, but his mother insisted he volunteer somewhere for community service hours for his senior project, in five years. For any normal 13-year-old, early rising always posed problems, but he had special issues. While being legally blind didn't challenge him in the getting up department, it posed other difficulties, such as finding transportation, or the simple act of walking. On a regular basis, James tripped over cracks in the sidewalk and other land features to and from school, especially when the sun put in an appearance. As a result, he walked slower than normal, which got him made fun of. However just blinking the wrong way could get you made fun of in middle school, and he shuddered to think what wearing the wrong clothes would get you.

With the aid of his cane, he stepped around several trash cans on the sidewalk, and over several cracks as well.

At least it isn't cold or raining, he thought, waiting for the bus. Cold always made the wait fun, not, and as for rain, he didn't have enough hands to hold both the cane and umbrella, especially folding it up one handed on the bus. Also, the rain made puddles which he couldn't always see, or feel with the cane. Sometimes he only identified them by the splash, and then he had a grand time walking around all day at school with wet feet.

Coming after about 10 minutes, the bus stopped and he waited while it lowered, allowing him easier access. He also noticed the bus spoke once it stopped, but the voice wasn't very loud. Even considering that defect, anything which helped him and those like him, was alright in his book. Getting on the bus, no one said hello except the driver, but then no one ever did.

Returning the greeting, James took a seat near the front, and put his backpack carrying a few bottles of water on the seat next to him. The silence of the bus was periodically interrupted by a computerized voice announcing various stops, until they got to one of the two main stops. At this point, the bus halted for several minutes, and a few people got
