Prologue
It has been almost a year since the three Solitude sleuths have spent much time together. Little has changed in the quaint bucolic village in western Pennsylvania. Dana and Larry and their dog Shalom have spent most of the year traveling around the country in a small motor home. Larry remains depressed over the betrayal by his only child. Fannie has been devoting more of her time to her home, husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She has been doing a lot of quilting and weaving for family members as well as the quilt shop in town. Sharon and Bob have been taking frequent cruises and spending most of their time at their second home in Myrtle Beach, trying to repair the many hurts and betrayals that have accumulated over their long and rocky marriage.
In mid March, the three women started meeting on a regular basis, having missed the camaraderie that had grown over the years. Shopping was one of their favorite activities; solving yet another grisly murder was the last thing on their minds.
Chapter 1
Late March
The three childhood friends were gathered around Dana’s rustic stone fireplace on a snowy Solitude afternoon. Dana, who loved being the hostess, set out a plate of Snickerdoodles and refilled Fannie’s and Sharon’s large mugs of steaming coffee.
I’ve had it with this weather,
said Sharon. I shoveled six inches of snow off our driveway this morning. I think it’s a new record for this late in the year. The previous record was like…one inch!
Dana nodded in agreement. Punxsutawney Phil is getting death threats for forecasting an early spring. Although he only gets it right about a third of the time, people are more irritated than usual. Pitt getting knocked out of the NCAA playoffs first round makes some folks cranky, too. Of course Bob and Larry are off enjoying golfing in Myrtle Beach. We should have gone with them. Hate golf but love the beach.
You think we Amish are backward and old fashioned. You English use a rodent to predict the weather!
Fannie smiled and shook her head.
Sharon chuckled, Yeah but that old rodent is a great draw for tourists and our cheese and wine shops. Besides, I think I read the whole woodchuck and shadow tradition comes from the Pennsylvania Dutch, dear heart. People love to come for the celebrations in February and the festival in the summer, and of course to ogle you guys.
Fannie snorted. Yeah, I don’t get the fascination. We’re just hardworking people who live our faith and try to keep it simple. But those tourist dollars also help a lot of us to make ends meet.
Dana reached for her third cookie. What are your thoughts about those local Amish kids who left the faith and now are starring on that television series?
Fannie shook
