About this ebook

Raising a wolf or wolf hybrid is not for everyone. The over fifteen year adventure documented in this book presents both the wonderful and heartwarming episodes and also some of the more difficult aspects of having a wolf in one's home environment. Very little seems to be available on this subject and it is the author's sincere wish that this book will help add to better understanding of these wonderful animals. The reader should obtain a better understanding of the behavioral characteristics of wolves in general and more fully understand why it is often very difficult to manage a fully mature wolf in a home or family environment. This is not a guide on how to do so, rather the message is that most often it is not advisable to obtain a wolf or wolf hybrid as a home companion. However, many reasons exist to do so and this book may provide some insight into what to expect and how our family managed to keep the peace with our grand girl Mde Myinga

My husband and I have lived with a wolf that was born in captivity as her ancestors were for 15 plus years. We have also had bobcats and foxes that we loved very much even a golden jungle cat. So wild animals were no strangers to us, just a matter of doing a lot of research and learning how to get along with these wild animals that have passed our way through out the years. Each companion have their own personality just as humans do. All in all we lived a very different life style according to what each of the companions needs were. Mde Myinga was not only the greatest companion and love of our lives. We learned much from her as she learned from us that we remained alpha with lots of thinking and ways around any trouble that could have occurred. It also took a lot of love and thinking power just to stay one jump ahead of Myinga.

    FORWARD

The object of this book is to tell how we raised a wolf in our home. She is our living spirit friend, but a wolf is not a pet. This was not without its' many trials and errors and questionable moments. We are VERY fortunate to have such a loving wolf with such a good personality, but she is still a wolf with wolf demands. She makes it known in many subtle, and not so subtle, ways depending upon one’s definition of subtle. If you or someone you know is considering raising a wolf or wolf hybrid as a pet this book should help shed some light on what may be encountered in the proposed adventure. After reading this you may just reconsider!

Between our beloved little bundle of joy and her playmate, the cat, this chair is slowly coming unraveled!

Wolves are feared by many people due to the fairy tale stories they grow up with such as these three most common ones: The Three Little Pigs, Peter And The Wolf along with, Little Red Riding Hood. But not all wolves are like what horror movies and television portray them to be.

How many times do any of us see a sign that says, DO NOT FEED THE WOLVES while camping in national parks? As a rule if any sign is posted in a national park, it is usually a, DO NOT FEED THE BEARS sign. Most people don't even know when a wild wolf has come around unless their tracks are seen.

Wolves are almost always very shy of people even when raised in captivity in a domestic environment. No matter how many generations wolves have been bred and raised in captivity within a domestic environment, they still maintain many wild traits that would take a very long time to breed out of them. Thus, unlike the dog, wolves, even when captive bred, remain non-domestic animals.

Wolf breeding in a captive environment puts them in what I would refer to as a catch twenty-two situation. When an owner of a pet wolf or hybrid finds they can no longer handle the pet and tries to return it or them back to the wild, the wolf or wolves have been documented to not make it on their own. The other wild wolf packs generally won't accept the wolf or wolves. Their hunting instincts are not honed for killing for full survival in the wild, and they usually die. Their natural fear and distrust of man has been all or mostly eliminated making them either a menace to man, or they may be killed out of fear if they approach someone wanting food or attention. I have seen documentary films of people trying to return several wolves back to the wild. The wolves were shown to sit around just watching and looking at their new surroundings. They will chase the wild game. But once they have it surrounded, they honestly don't know what to do with it. They just sit and watch while there would be meal runs away to live another day while they starve.

Owning a wolf or even a wolf hybrid is a huge controversy and outlawed in many states as of this publication. As posted on the Internet, there have never been any reported cases of wolves attacking a human in the wild as of 2007. Occasionally we hear of a pet wolf or wolf hybrid attacking a child or adult, but no one seems to know why. No further investigations seem to generally be reported after the bold headlines Wolf Dog Mauls Child. For example, was it truly a wolf or was it a wolf hybrid? Was the child or adult picking on the animal, pulling its fur or whiskers or ears, or poking at it with a stick, etc.? Was the animal left out with little food and water and deprived of companionship? I have been told by many vets and several other people that the more dog that is in a wolf hybrid, the more dangerous it can be.

Now let's turn this around to man's best friend, the good old domesticated dog that has been around for centuries. All too often I hear of a chow, pit bull, rottweiler or other breeds of dogs that have attacked, killed or mauled a child or grown up. Yet man's best friend isn't outlawed! Again, this is a HUGE controversy that I do not care to get into, and this is not what this book is about. Dog owners must be ever vigilant and responsible regardless of the breed. Be sure to check for local regulations before purchasing any pet.

Each animal, no matter what it is, has its own varying personality as people do. This is what makes them and us so unique.

There are three wolf personality types that I know of, and each type has its varying degrees that go with it.

A wolf that is afraid of its own shadow, surroundings and the world it lives in. This type is very mistrusting excessively timid and reclusive.

A wolf that is destructive, and will rip, tear and chew up everything in site when no one is looking. These can be very, very cunning.

A wolf that is very loving, and loves people, animals and the world, this type is not afraid and not aggressive unless provoked.

Again, I make mention that there are varying degrees, but the wolf I am writing about has the wonderful number 3 personality. However, she is still a wolf even though born in captivity with a good socialized home as were several past wolf generations in her family tree before her.

Her Algonquin name is, Mde Myinga, which literally means Medicine Wolf. I will make the pronunciation of her name as easy as possible. Mde can be said like, Me-day but with the e being more silent. Myinga can be pronounced, My - ing - ga. The first g is soft with more of a harder g sound with the a. This takes away the in sound of her name.

This particular wolf is a mixture of gray and Mexican black and red wolf, the Mexican wolf helps to keep her size down, for they are smaller in size and weight than the northern gray wolf. Her full-grown weight is 55 pounds.

Wolves, like bobcats with which we have also had personal experience, MUST be raised with other domestics if they are expected to get along really well. This is especially important if the owner wishes to have a companion pet. The acceptance is easier if done from the puppy stage. It also depends upon the wolf’s personality type as to how long it takes for that acceptance.

Myinga accepts other animals, but still in wolf fashion, known as the pecking order. She maintains the fact that she is top boss. She is the four-legged alpha with them. After all they are a part of her pack. But, we are her alpha leaders.

When owning a wolf, one must be alert, but NOT alarmed; one must also be on guard, but NOT on edge and last; one must also be cautious, but NOT nervous or afraid. Once fear of a pet sets in, as with most any pet, the relationship is pretty well over. The animal will pick up on any fear, nervousness and hesitation. If you let the pet be the Alpha, you have lost, and may never completely regain your Alpha status.

If anyone considers getting a pet of any kind that is of wild blood or even a hybrid, one should seriously consider all of the known and possibly unknown needs of the animal for its entire life. It is essential to be FULLY prepared to care for the animal for the duration of its life, regardless of how its’ personality develops as it matures into what ever it will all too quickly become.

Wolves have been reported to live 15 to 20 years in a good healthy environment. These types of animals will require MORE care and TIME. They seem endless in energy, have more curiosity, and are more independent in nature. One must think in a different way than usual from what is done with a regular domesticated pet. It can really tax the mind! Like a human child, they do not come complete with an accurate book of instructions.

    MDE MYINGA'S PACK

    (Medicine Wolf)

She was given to us wrapped in a baby blanket as a living breathing Spirit Helper in the fur. She was a replacement for the loss of our domestically bred little cross fox we had as a companion, which is another story in the Medicine Wheel of Life in itself. We received her at 8 weeks of age in the fall of 1992 at a pow wow. Remembering back about our neighbor’s 150 pound male wolf named, Richard that he had, we had no doubt that our little girl would be just as wonderful as he was.

We never met Myinga's parents, but were told to make sure she was raised with a cat or else she may kill one if introduced later in her life. Myinga's sire did not hunt cats down to kill them. He just didn't like them in his territory. That was no problem for us since we already had one laid back kitty, Link, who was king of his turf, and an older dog, Sandy. He was a shorthaired generic mixed Doberman of medium size. He weighed 30 pounds dripping wet.

We were also advised to play a lot with her ears, so she would be used to us handling them for inspection. Otherwise after she matured we may never get away with checking them out to make sure they were clean. We were also advised to NEVER feed her raw meat. A raw meat diet is said to possibly contribute to aggressiveness, and also rob her body of B vitamins. So she was raised on a high protein commercial dog food along with table treats and well cooked meat that is not left red inside when done. Nothing was ever mentioned about any other supplements.

Myinga received the full set of puppy shots with the EXCEPTION of rabies. Our vet said that the rabies shot could lay dormant in her system and become activated as rabies itself any time through her years of growth or even in older age, which could cause her to go mad and turn on us. Again there is a controversy over rabies shots, and in many states they are outlawed for a wolf and a wolf hybrid to have.

When I took our little pride and joy out to potty that evening, she heard a noise over in the trees about eighty feet away from the house. Immediately she jumped between the woods and me even though we were seventy-five feet or more from it. Oh how she barked and growled as she leaned up against my legs. She barked so hard that she knocked her little fuzzy self
