About this ebook
"My Name Is Ramona..." is the true story of Ramona Rich and her twenty-four hour misadventure.
On the morning of November 24, 2007, seventy-nine year old Ramona's life was about to change. Ramona decided to go windsurfing...alone. She is in good health, as well as an accomplished and skilled windsurfer. She has thirty years experience behind her.
Ramona is windsurfing on Conception Bay, on the Baja California Peninsula, Mexico. Conception Bay covers an area of over 100 square miles, and for the most part, is surrounded on three sides by uninhabited desert. Over two miles offshore, her mast broke, leaving her drifting at the mercy of the tides and wind.
Ramona spent the next several hours bouncing like a cork on the surface of Conception Bay, until sometime during the night, she finally beached on the "far side" of the bay. Ramona started walking, and ultimately walked seven and a half miles through desert, before collapsing from exhaustion.
No one was looking for her...
No one knew she was missing...
"My Name I Ramona...", and this is her story. I thank her for giving me the opportunity to tell it.

Thanks to Rick & Darci Ceccanti for their technical input, regarding the sport of windsurfing.
Above all, my sincere thanks to Ramona Rich, for allowing me to share her story...
Prologue
My name is Ramona...and I love riding the wind
. I was born in Clear Lake, Washington; on November 15, 1928. Just over a week ago, I celebrated my 79th birthday. Right now, I'm thinking, I just might not see my next birthday. This thought comes to me as I bounce over the waves, while hanging onto my windsurf board for dear life. I'm drifting with the wind and the tide, further away from my beach home on Playa Los Naranjo's.
Several hours and several miles ago, I left my beach to enjoy my first morning on the bay in many months. I couldn't have asked for a better morning to windsurf. The water was calm, with a gentle wind...near perfect conditions. An enjoyable morning turned into an immediate disaster, as the mast on my windsurf board snapped during a jibe
maneuver. A jibe
maneuver is simply a technique where using the boom
, you flip the sail around for the purpose of reversing your direction. I figured I was easily over two miles from my beach...maybe even as much as three miles away.
I'm grateful there is a full moon tonight...I don't feel quite so alone. I don't know exactly where I am, but I know for sure I'm drifting somewhere in the middle of Bahia de Concepcion, a one hundred plus square mile bay in Baja, Mexico. I say drifting, but in reality I'm bouncing around like a cork on the water. I have absolutely no control over my board or the direction it chooses to go.
I'm cold, I'm tired, and I'm thirsty. I pray quietly to myself, that someone will come for me, and save me. Praying...yeah, I was praying. I've never been particularly religious...not really. I've never been much of a church-go-er, but I do have my own thoughts on
