Introduction
Good marriages are not a result of the luck of the draw, but are cultivated and worked on with great diligence and patience. The first thing to consider is the attitude toward the marriage. Do you think of it as a temporary thing, that if your spouse doesn't change or act like you think they should, you will just end the marriage? This is not a good way to look at a marriage and certainly not the Christian way. Marriage is a covenant, designed by God between one man and one woman. The Bible is full of references with how Jesus Christ regards the church and in many of the examples; they are likened to that of a husband and wife with Christ being the bridegroom and the church being the bride. If you approach your marriage with this same attitude, you will see it as an everlasting entity and will treat it accordingly. When trouble arises instead of bolting and running, you will face it head on with prayer and respect of your spouse and work through it.
Television shows and the movies and even romance novels give us such a false look at what a marriage is we often feel cheated if ours is not going like the ones we see on the screen or read about in the book. Remember, those are fiction, not real. A real romance novel marriage starts with Jesus Christ in the center. Add pure devotion to one another and the promise to do what it takes to make it work and you will have your romance novel marriage.
Chapter 1: Unrealistic Expectations
Building a strong, Christian marriage takes hard work, commitment, and deep trust in God. However, there are pitfalls that many Christian couples face along the way. One of the biggest pitfalls that can quickly sabotage a marriage is unrealistic expectations. If you’re completely honest with yourself, you realize that everyone comes into marriage with some unrealistic expectations. No
