Christian Success in a Secular World - T.J. BRANDT

    INTRODUCTION

During the time that my wife and I were mentors of a Young Adults Group Ministry, we were once approached by a Young Adult – the age range for that group was 18-35, who is an only child of, by his account, Christ-loving and church-going parents. This young man is well established in an elite career for which he is well groomed. This individual is almost always in attendance when the Young Adults Group meets and he conveys a strong desire to follow Christ in his walk through life. He believes that he is possibly over-qualified for the career position he holds and states that his desire is to hone his skills and embark on a new career within the same discipline, but as the business owner with his own list of clientele. He shares that he is advised by his current employer and other mentors that if he wants that dream to become a reality, he should focus, be more structured and, by-all-means, go for it.

On a similar note, a young lady of the same group shares that she and other ladies of the Young Adults Group Ministry are wondering where are the real men? where are the leaders? - who believe in Christ and are focused on being successful in their career paths. More specifically, she states that most ladies of the above-mentioned age group find that men of the same age are either very Christ-like but possess no real career focus – or just the opposite – are very career-focused but have Christ stuck in a far corner of their agenda. In conclusion, she states that she and her female friends are looking for real men – leaders – who have Christ in every aspect of their lives, including their quest for career success. She says that those elements are the criteria that a man must fulfill, because such men would be good husbands and proper mentors to children.

The basis of this writing stems from the aforementioned queries. This writing is meant to be a guide for anyone faced with the dilemma that they may find at the cross-roads of their lives when confronted with the decision-making process more commonly referred to as choice. It is meant to help clarify the process of setting priorities, developing a plan and putting that plan into action and all-the-while learning how to respond to those unexpected circumstances that always seem to find their way into their, otherwise, self-perceived perfect lives.

In a nutshell, this guide will help answer the following questions: Who are we? Where are we? and Where do we go from here? while being cognizant of the difference between what we do and who we are. Bottom-line:

The goal is to be Christ-like and successful in today’s secular world!

    PREFACE

Upon looking at the title of this writing, the reader needs to be comfortable with the definition of the words contained therein. Some may argue that the terms Christian and Success may be mutually exclusive and that the concept of being a Christian and functioning in a secular world are two ideas that just do not mix. The purpose of this composition is to clearly define these terms and explore the possibility that by some wonderful realization they can and do co-exist. Coupled with a prayerful and correct application of these terms, one will see that they can and do work very well together, all based upon a proper perspective.

Before we get started, it is necessary to lay a framework as to how this daily guide is to be accessed and applied. You see, it is not my writing – that is to say, I am not the original author; but rather, I was inspired by our Creator and others to offer this text as a tool for those who desire to be and may see themselves as instruments in our Redeemer’s hands. Anyone who is chosen to undertake the challenge of sharing
