Uh-oh, Brett thought as she stood on the broad front step of the upper North Vancouver home and rang the doorbell a third time. There were banging sounds from inside but no one coming to answer the door. It fit the phone message that had brought her here. A man needing someone to walk his dog but he didn’t even know what breed it was?

If there was one thing she’d learned this summer, it was that you could tell a lot about a person by the relationship they had with their dog.

You don’t even own a dog, girl. Or a man. Or a house. Or a car. What does that say about you?

Shut up. I’m trying. The dog part anyway.

Here we’ve got a stone-and-green stucco concrete monster on a beautiful street, with a cracked, concrete-slab driveway, that’s cut into a steep hillside and backs onto a strip of tall-treed greenbelt. How much do you think this place costs? A million-six? Two?

Chelsea barked twice and Brett tossed her a meaty dog treat. Two it is.

She looked back at the house. And yes, Mei-Mei, I saw that too. Construction-paper artwork taped to that bedroom window up there. And the plastic, three-wheeler peeking out from the right side of the garage. You’re right. They’ve definitely got kids.

She tossed a treat to the poodle.

Brett clucked her tongue. "But they don’t have time to fix their driveway. And the man of the house who leaves a message on my service doesn’t even know what breed of dog they have. Soooo…workaholic businessman with trophy second-wife? Run-down guy in
