    I awoke from a dream, a vision of such power that I had to immediately tell my wife. She groaned when I kissed her sweet-smelling shoulder. It was only 5:15 AM, a good twenty minutes before we usually got up.

    Unh…gwhunh? she mumbled into her pillow as she’d been sleeping face down, arms wide, trying to embrace the world and bring it all just a little bit under her control.

    Listen, I whispered, and brushed her blonde hair back from her face. I have a story to tell you. I kissed her cheek softly, lingering.

    Whah…?

    It’s important. Will you listen?

    She sniffed a little and opened her eyes just a crack. I saw her search with them for the bedside clock, register the time, groan a little more. But when I nuzzled her cheek again, she finally nodded and brought her arms in closer, drawing the sheets and blankets close. Go ahead.

    It takes place on a parapet, I said. You know, the walkway along the top of a castle wall. It looks both into the courtyard and out over all the fields and rocks of the kingdom, and the approaching road…
