      Wicker Glade Parish Church had long-welcomed everyone into their sanctuary. The open invitation to worship included all persons regardless of race, age, sexual orientation, ability, gender or economic circumstance. Since Christ loves everyone, so should the church, was the maxim which bonded their committees, congregation and fellowship. Such a statement adorned the front of their weekly bulletins. Some long-standing members, however, had become uncomfortable because perceptions were changing. In spite of what the bulletin said, according to some parishioners, not everyone was welcome in the House of the Lord.

      Anyone who entered the little church was met with the morning sun which became a rainbow of colors projected by the ornate stained-glass windows. The entryway to the sanctuary was centered in the back, which broke into two aisles and led, at converged angles, to the front of the chancel. Positioned above the Christ candles for worship, an old rugged cross fastened high on the center wall brought a sense of awed reverence to all who worshiped there. Welcome or not, the unexpected visitor they received during the First Sunday’s service in Lent proved to be a revelation which they could never have imagined would grace the doorway of their holy temple.

      A gentleman, approximately twenty years of age some surmised, arrived late to service and opened the central sanctuary door five minutes into Pastor Marge’s sermon. The squeaking of the hinges placed an unrehearsed pause into the minister’s delivery, as the young man, dressed in all black, bent down to remove his sandals. Although he tried to close the wooden door behind him without disturbing the gathered congregation, the hinges sent their shrill cries across the sanctuary a second time. He walked over to the usher desk and took a bulletin for the day’s order of worship.

      Pastor Marge noted the young man who had entered the church and interrupted her sermon. Although she did not recognize him, his short-cut brunette hair and thin, trimmed beard made him seem familiar somehow. She paused a moment and
