    Author’s Note

    Introduction

"Men at some time are masters of their fates.

The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars

    But in ourselves"

When he wrote these words hundreds of years ago, William Shakespeare was referring to a condition common to humanity. Why can’t we be Caesar? Why can’t we achieve what others have? Why aren’t we catching the breaks instead of someone else?

The fault, Shakespeare tells us, lies not in our stars. It isn’t controlled by the forces of heaven. It isn’t a question of luck. The fault, he says, lies in our selves. It isn’t that we can’t do it; it’s that we haven’t found it in ourselves to do it.

Granted, Cassius was saying this to Brutus to motivate a killing – but the essential idea is not lost because a kernel of truth remains within.

You can even turn it around and away from any negative connotations. If we can take all the credit or blame for our faults, then shouldn’t we do the same for our blessings as well? I think it works better that way. Because our blessings, dear reader, also lie not in our stars. They rest firmly within ourselves.

After all, why shouldn’t we get some credit? Why shouldn’t we take a bow? When we pursue our dreams, we are taking an active role in our lives, creating blessings that will benefit us for untold years to come.

So, yes. Our blessings lie in ourselves. And it is up to us to find them.

After writing my monthly piece in Recovering the Self for an entire year – which you can find in The Worth of Dreams The Value of Dreamers – I wasn’t so sure I’d still have anything of value to say. But what I learned was that when you engage your dreams, when you make them a part of your everyday life, you find something new and valuable every day.
