I am an elderly widow ( 82) I took a short story course when I was younger and obtained a Diploma from the School of Authorship in London. I have never tried to sell my work untill now, and I made up a book on Microsoft Publisher, which I must say looked good, and I received a write up concerning it from the Editor of the DPH Society in Dunning Perthshire.I am currently busy converting this to Microsoft Word - hence the delay. It had text boxes.I am just a determined old granny who has had a varied life. I came through the traumas of World War 2, I have nursed many adults and children in Scotland with the old dreaded Fevers. I have served in the WRAF as a Dental Assistant, and tried my hand at Bisley rifle range whilst there.I emmigrated to S.AFrica in 1968 with my husband and 3 children, where I continued with yet another hobby...Oil Painting.I have however reverted back to the writing to see if I can leave behind a legacy of some sort.and at the same time add something to my meagre pension.

    Foreword

Back in 1942, when I was 12 years old, my high School form teacher asked me to stand up and tell him what I had decided I was going to do when I leave school. I replied that I planned to be a writer or an artist. He told me, that with those two choices I would have to attend College after Leaving the High school -Then I will have to decide on something else I replied, and sat down, with a somewhat dejected look on my face. When I noted the despondent look on Mr.Tait’s face, I thought about what he had said and decided to try hard and make one of my goals at least. Finally after a few health set backs, I managed to Register at Belvedere Fever Hospital in London Road Glasgow, and the day on which I turned 17, I proudly turned up there with my suitcase to begin my training. I had also taken a correspondence course on Short Story Writing, and having obtained a Diploma.

I carried on with that and my Art as a sideline. The following story is about the Seriousness of becoming a nurse, and the various obstacles and fears met during training, but at the same time, the fun moments and then, the sadness when a patient dies. Having the art, of always staying on form, and the initiative to take over, and perform in an emergency. Belvedere Fever hospital no longer exists and I believe, most of the buildings have been demolished. Some Web stories relate tales of hauntings. –That would not surprise me in the least, for many people old and young drew their last breath there in high Fever.

    Preface

My room was top right of the old building facing east, and I loved it. The ground floor left front rooms had, been reserved for the Matron and assistant’s offices and the chief Medical resident Dr. McKenzie. On the right were the grand room we used for meetings, and nurse’s sick rooms. Someone posted stories recently on the web of it being haunted. I was shocked when I read this, but in a way, I suppose there could be something to it. I saw many deaths here. The first one being an old man whose head was completely bald. I was passing by the closed screens when a hand popped out and grabbed me by the shoulder. A senior Nurse ordered me to go and fetch a bowl of warm water and help to sponge the body, which did freak me out somewhat. The body, had not, yet become stiff, but was a lifeless - chalky white elderly man with open vacant eyes.

My second experience of death was in the female pneumonia ward, where woman
