ABOUT THE AUTHOR
INTRODUCTION
The Chinese have the world’s oldest continuous civilization, dating back at least 3,500 years. Over those centuries, the Chinese have compiled a remarkable record of inventions, including gunpowder, paper, printing, the compass, the seismograph, eyeglasses, the umbrella, paper money, the mechanical clock and kites.
Following recent decades of turmoil, China has become a relatively stable country. Still, the nation faces serious problems today as the Chinese people undergo significant change.
The ruling Communist Party has abandoned its centrally planned economy, replacing it with a free market. For much of the population, the market-oriented economy has brought dramatically improved living standards. In rural areas, however, an estimated 55 million people still live in poverty.
With the liberalization of the economy, a relatively small number of Chinese would like to see a liberalization of the government. But while the Communist government has taken a reformist approach to economic matters, it remains an authoritarian and repressive political organization that will not tolerate dissent.
The country also has a population-growth problem. The population has been growing so fast that the authorities fear it will outstrip the country’s ability to feed everyone. To halt the growth, Beijing implemented a one-couple, one-child family planning policy in 1979.
The Chinese want to advance economically and technologically, but along with modernization comes new ideas and aspects of Western culture. The people see themselves as now facing a dilemma — how do they modernize and still remain Chinese.
