I'm a native Arizonan and while growing up, I would often write down notes about stories germinating in my head. I was always interested in the fantasy genre, having been introduced to Anne McCaffrey's Riders of Pern book series (may she rest in peace) in elementary school. I devoured Piers Anthony, Raymond E. Feist, and later, Lord of the Rings. In trying my hand at mysteries, I've found they are fickle things, like a knot in yarn. Instead of cutting it, try to work it out and once unraveled, have a straight line of yarn again. I will some more books coming soon, so please enjoy the ones I have out now. Chapter 1

    Spring, 1481

Corbaci Orhan dried his hands on the towel that Leyla handed him. He had just come in from the fields, excitedly feeling the new shoots that the corn were giving out.

With any luck, we won’t have a drought this summer.

    Knowing our luck…

He turned around and held up a finger, quieting her. Don’t. You’ll jinx it.

Leyla giggled and leaned forward to kiss him. Her sapphire-blue eyes were bright in the sun, her black hair catching the rays, taking his breath away. The scars on her cheek did little to mar her beauty. After finally killing Dracula, the scars had started healing. I’m hoping we wouldn’t have to worry about anything except our crop yield. She amended, placating him.

Leyla, be happy we even have a good crop at all. What with the drought last year, the fields are recovering this year.

    Leyla sighed. I know.

Besides, I know you wanted to stay in Bucharest, but don’t you think this is better? Having all this land for us…servants you can order around…more wealth than what you had…and a husband who loves you. What more can you want?

    How about children?

Orhan closed his mouth. He hadn’t considered children after his sons had died. You want children?

I would like at least one. I’m sure you can give me at least that.

Their talk was interrupted by the thundering of hooves. Orhan was on the alert, as messengers from the sultan were quite rare, with the new sultan on the throne now. Orhan went outside and noted the leader who sat stiffly upright in the saddle.

    Corbaci Orhan?

    Yes.

The leader of the six-horse group handed him a rolled-up paper. New orders from the sultan, my lord. He requests your presence immediately. It’s urgent.

Orhan could only swallow and nod. Very well. The last time this had happened, he ended up facing his worst enemy. What was the problem now?

The leader nodded. We are to escort you, sir.

Let me get my things. Orhan told him, the words of the conversation being dreadfully familiar to him. He went inside, rubbed the wolf’s head for luck, and hurriedly packed light. Leyla watched him, quiet at his side. Her silence unnerved him. Leyla, I don’t know if this will be a repeat. I sincerely hope not.

Her sapphire eyes darkened slightly. Go there and come right back. I won’t lose you again.

He kissed her lightly on the lips. Don’t worry, love. I won’t. He headed outside, where one of the soldiers had saddled a horse. He mounted and saw Leyla wasn’t there in the doorway, so he turned the horse and followed the group to Istanbul.

Sultan Mehmed had died years ago, and the new sultan, Bayezid the II, Mehmed’s oldest son and heir now ruled. He was like his father in some ways, but what perhaps shocked Orhan the most, was the that Bayezid removed the paintings from the imperial palace that Mehmed had commissioned Italian artists to create.

Orhan rode into the stables, the motions quite familiar from the time years before. He had noticed a marked decrease in the pain in his knee
