The Thane saw the cook's boy go overboard. I was looking through my glass, reading the position of the sun, judging that our course was true. The Thane liked to stand on the aft deck next to Tillermansson, to watch the waves and learn.
The Thane's voice boomed across the deck, and a line was thrown; the boy, a stout quick one of Palander stock, seized the rope and was hauled aboard in a matter of moments.
After last night's squall the swells were high; everyone on deck was ordered to either tie on or stay below. The small fleet had scattered, but sails were sighted as they rejoined. Sighing, I rubbed my side where my old knife wound ached me. As Seapilot, and the Thane's personal choice for this voyage, I would have to apply discipline, a part of my job I disliked but performed without question.
Jorjan Hullson, my mate, brought the boy to me. This was the boy's first voyage as cook's help. He earned the place because of Palander pride, even though he appeared not to know the first thing about the sea and sailing.
Tell me your name, boy,
I said, keeping my voice stern and low.
Bebo, Pilot.
His nest of curly brown Palander hair was slick on his head. Eyes the color of sand stared at me, almost fiercely; then as if he remembered who he was talking to, he looked down.
