    Planning a wedding can be stressful and time consuming. It is an emotional event, one you may have dreamt about your whole life, and a time when you can be talked into spending much more money than was originally budgeted. Because there are so many things to consider when planning the big day, if you are not organized with set budgets for every item, you can wind up in debt. Today, a traditional wedding with around one hundred guests can cost $30,000 or more. Many couples start off their lives together with wedding debt taking years to pay off the loan, and parents have been known to take out a second mortgage on the house to pay for a child’s wedding. But what if there was a way to cut the average cost of a wedding by more than a third. The old saying: You can’t have your cake and eat it too, is wrong, you can!

    We put on our daughter’s wedding, a formal 110 guest affair, for under $10,000. There was a string quartet playing music for the ceremony, a professional photographer taking pictures, a formal, sit down dinner reception and live entertainment. It involved a lot of planning, organizing, and delegating, which involved relatives, friends, and neighbours; however the wedding and reception went off without a hitch.

    When our daughter became engaged in September and told us they planned to wed the following July, I immediately became concerned. Because I had done event planning as part of my job, I knew it would be difficult to find a venue for the wedding, not just because we only had ten months, but because July was in the middle of wedding season.
