      When I was in optometry school the above statement was repeated to us on many occasions. Back then it seemed impossible to understand how this could be true, until I had practiced eye care for several years. Then it occurred to me how much I learned every time I looked into someone's eyes and saw their blood vessels and nervous tissue. Hardening of the arteries, high blood pressure, diabetes, brain tumors, systemic disease such as syphilis, even later signs of Lyme disease were possible to detect.
