Chapter 6

Mapute started to feel new pain when the pig
started on his other hand and now he was starting to feel weak.
But that did not stop Tar hitting his hand.
Mapute fainted again and he was out for fifteen minutes this time and when he woke up he saw both hands and he knew that he would never be able to use his hands again.
This seemed to make him more determined not to give in to them.
He was in a daze but when he felt Tar pulling his pants down he groaned.
Tar said. ‘Come on man tell us what we want to know.’
With his speech slurred Mapute said? ‘Go to hell you monster.’
But in answer to that Tar hit Marpute on his left knee.
Mapute shouted. ‘Oh my god give me peace.’
But Tar said. ‘You won't beat me now tell me where is the diamond.’
No answer again.
Tar hit Mapute on the other knee. Now Marpute was hanging on the ropes around his body.
Mapute fell unconscious again.
Tar sat down on the grass and started to smoke the cigar that he had used on Marpute.
After ten minutes Smith said come on Tar we have to get him to talk, but do you think we should dress some of his injuries he does not look too good to me.’
‘Oh some of these black boys could stand up to more than that they are made of steel.
Tar got to his feet and picked up Mapute by the chin but there was no sign of life in his face.
He put his hand on Marpute’ neck and he could not find a pulse; he turned to face Smith and said. ‘He is a goner Mr Smith.’
Smith said. ‘Oh no we had better get a hold of his brother in London now.’
They left Mapute’s body still tied to the tree.
His body hung there for three days and it was found by a couple out with their dog.
The barman had phoned the police about Marpute not coming back for his things.
But the police said that if nobody had phoned about him then maybe he was not missing and he had a reason for leaving his gear behind and told the barman to hang on to his gear for a while.
Then when his body was found the police went through his gear that he had left in

    Chapter 1

The year was 1954 the time was three o’clock in the afternoon.

The place was South Africa the Quanta’s Diamond Mine.

Five hundred feet down the mine an African Negro named Baraka Guttrom was hard at work with his mining pick his head and shoulders were covered in sweat, he had been hacking at the wall of rock with his pick, then filling the rock into tubs on wheels.

His pick struck the wall but this time his pick sank into the wall and to his astonishment the wall came away in a big fall.

Baraka jumped back out of the way of the falling wall but then he started to laugh because if the wall had fallen on him it would have done no damage because it was soft clay like dust.

He sat back still laughing when he saw a glint in the falling dust, be bent forward and grabbed hold of the tiny clink of light that was shining but to his surprise he had a hand full and it was heavy.

He scraped his thumbnail along its edge and the shining got bigger he reached for his water bottle and took the cork out of it then he poured the water over his hand.

When the water began to wash away the dust the thing that was left in his hand was a diamond the size of a tennis ball.

He staggered backwards with the shock of seeing in his hand the biggest diamond that he had only dreamed of.

He had not seen his Negro foreman had come up behind him.

Then the foreman called Kikuyu Keppel said ‘Oh what you got their Niger.’

Baraka said ‘Not much boss it’s just a lump of rock.’

‘Oh just a rock you say Niger well let me see it.’

Baraka had to give it up to his boss and the boss said. ‘My god Niger you have just made me a rich man.’

‘Oh no boss what about me there’s plenty of money for both of us with a diamond that size?’

The foreman picked up Baraka’s pick and said placing the point of the pick against Baraka’s chest. ‘You will get no money Baraka but I will do one thing for you, I will name the diamond, The Baraka Diamond.’

Then he pulled back the pick and hit Baraka in the chest.

He unhooked his water bottle from his belt.

His water had a metal cover around it.

And the bottle had a secret bottom which he unscrewed a small metal cup fell into his hand.

The cup was full of sand this was to have the bottle the same weight every night when the guards sometimes searched him he looked at it and smiled because the diamond would just go into the cup.

He put the secret bottom back on then hung the bottle back on his belt.

Then he took the shovel and started to dig into the cave in when he was satisfied he put the body of Baraka into the hole then he covered the body with the cave in, he made the pile of dirt look like a natural cave in.

Then for the rest of his shift he went to see over miners in the tunnels.

When his shift was finished and all the miners were gathered at the cage waiting to go to the surface he did what he did every night he started counting his men then he looked surprised to his men and he said the count is down,

He then said getting his little book out of his pocket I would shout your names out answer me when you hear your names.

Before he started to shout their names out he said. ‘Who is missing?’

A voice from the back said. ‘The invisible man.’

    They all started laughing.

Then he started calling their names out.

At the end he said its Baraka Guttrom.

A miner at the back whose name was Mapute and the best friend of Baraka said. ‘That’s my friend boss what tunnel was he working in.’

He was working in number nine.’

Then I go with you to see if he is ok. It’s not like Baraka to miss roll call.’

Two of the miners said ‘We will come to Mapute you might need help.’

The three men ran along the tunnel as fast as the light would allow and when they came to the cave in Mapute went down on his knees and started to dig with his bare hands trying to find his friends head.

Mapute was covered in sweat then he came to his friends head and he knew that his best friend was dead.’

He sat back with tears in his eyes then the three men began to uncover the body and when Mapute pulled his body clear he felt wet on his hand and when he looked his hand was covered in blood.

He said. ‘Look there’s blood on my hand but where is it coming from, he then laid the body out on the ground and he went over it and he found the hole in his chest.

He sat they’re for ten minutes then he said. ‘Something is not right here this dust could not put a hole in him it would take a big rock to kill my friend.’

Then one of the other two men said look at the pick it’s covered in blood.’

Mapute took hold of the pick and said. ‘Someone killed him and who is
