Ch 01 - What Is Joomla?
How Joomla Works – A Visual
Diagram 01.1
The diagram above is a simple visual representation of how Joomla works. The website owner / administrator, logs in to the Joomla Admin user interface, sometimes called the Joomla Admin Back end. The Joomla Admin interface is what the Joomla owner / administrator uses to create articles in Joomla. Add images, video or audio to these articles and save them to the Joomla database tables. Joomla treats each individual web page as an article.
When a visitor’s Browser requests for a web page, Joomla considers this as a request for a specific article. The Joomla CMS will then:
Reach into its database tables
Pickup the article’s content placed there earlier on by the website owner / administrator
Then Joomla will pick up the default website template set
Place the article content within this template
Finally deliver properly formatted content within the template to the visitor’s Browser
The visitor then Sees the web page requested for.
Joomla is an award-winning Content Management System (CMS). Joomla empowers you to build a large interactive Web site, a Forum, a Blog, a News site, An E-shop, bound to a shopping cart and multiple payment gateways, Powerful online applications and more.
Among Joomla's best features are is its ease-of-use and extensibility. This has made Joomla the most widely used CMS on the Internet. It's arguably the most popular CMS used to build websites and tons of other stuff that is driven via the Internet.
I think that best of all, Joomla being an open source solution, it is available free of cost to everyone.
What's A Content Management System (CMS)?
A content management system is software that keeps perfect track of every bit of content on a Web site. This is pretty much like a local public library keeps track of all its books and how it stores them and how it loans them out to individuals to read.
Web site content can be simple text, photos, music, video, documents, just about anything you can think of.
A major advantage of using a CMS to build your website or portal is that it requires almost no serious technical skill or knowledge to install, manage and use. It’s the CMS that manages the acceptance and delivery of all the web site content. Hence as website owner you do not have to be overly concerned or highly technically skilled to do this.
Can Joomla Help Me When I Have To Build A Website For A Client?
Joomla is specifically designed to be remarkably easy to install and set up. This is great because many people who opt to use Joomla do not have a great deal of technical skills. Many Web hosting services offer a single-click install of Joomla CMS. This helps anyone get their new websites up and running in just a few minutes without a load of technical stress.
Joomla uses a template when it delivers web site content to a site visitors Browser. It’s the Joomla template that determines the website’s look and feel.
Joomla templates are pretty easy to construct if you have some design and HTML / CSS / JavaScript / PHP coding skills. Multiple templates can be used by Joomla when it delivers the content of various web site pages.
There are a huge number of websites that offer Joomla templates. A ton of them offer such templates completely free of cost. Many of these templates look stunning.
If you just cannot find a suitable template for your Joomla driven website from among the templates offered free of cost, there are - Premium Joomla Template - sites as well. These templates are offered at very attractive ( modest ) prices.
Joomla's ease of use helps Web designers to turn into Web developers with the least pain. Web designers can now craft beautiful, full featured, interactive web sites for their clients simply by getting competent in downloading, installing, configuring and using Joomla.
Then with really minimal instructions they can transfer day to day, website content changes to their clients themselves. Hence, clients get empowered to Manage their websites which results in a definite reduction in the cost of ownership and maintenance for clients. A win:win for everyone.
Joomla CMS Extensions
If a client needs special functionality for their Joomla CMS driven website such as:
Social Networking
Blogging
A Forum ( Public or Private )
An E-Commerce solution
A News delivery site
And tons more
You will discover that Joomla is highly extensible.
There are thousands of Joomla extensions ( most available for free under the GPL license ) that are available in the Joomla Extensions Directory that will help deliver all of the above functionality to the Joomla website.
Some of these extensions are Commercial but very modestly priced for the functionality, ease of use, and support, that they bring to the Joomla website in which they are installed and configured for use.
Why Is Everyone So Excited About Joomla?
It’s completely free to use
Is very easy to install, configure, use and extend
Support all media types in multiple formats
Supports multiple languages. Deliver website content in your native language to site visitors
