Chapter One: What is an Information Product?

In the world of solo entrepreneurs (solopreneurs) or small businesses, there has been a lot of talk lately around information products. Especially if the business owner offers a service such as tarot readings, chiropractic, coaching, or any health or wellness activity, then offering an information product can be a great way to introduce new clients to your services. Authors of fiction and nonfiction can also benefit from an information product. Whether it’s about writing or publishing related topics or a new book in a series or a book about a series and its world, information products can be utilized for fiction authors, too.

So what exactly is an information product? An information product is usually an ebook published to provide information to potential readers or clients about your offerings. For solopreneurs or small business people, the information product can be a taste, often at a lower price point, to entice people to purchase bigger packages of services. Fiction authors can use the information product as a lower entry price to a series of books and to introduce readers to the type of writing an author does. It also can be a guide to a well-received series, or it can be a short nonfiction ebook on writing related topics, which can help networking.

An information product generally is written with a specific purpose in mind. It can be a gateway into a more in-depth services or offerings. (In the case of fiction authors, it’s a gateway into more of the author’s books.) It can also be used as a networking tool, such as for free giveaways, like the recent Awesome Writer’s Muse Giveaway (http://www.awesomewritersmuse.com/) that happened in December 2012. An author or small business person can offer the information product for free to readers or other professionals. If an author has several series of books or a business owner has several classes, then it’s a good idea to create an information product for each one.

So, we know that an information product, which kind of is a cumbersome name, is a small ebook that leads people into additional books, products, or services. But, what goes in it? How does one put it together? And can we come up with a new name for it?

Does an information product have to be an ebook?

In our current marketplace, an ebook is the best medium to share information with a wide variety of readers. It can be purchased and downloaded from a website or sold through an online vendor. Print books don’t have that flexibility. They are purchased and then must be shipped to the reader. During the shipping time the purchaser could lose enthusiasm for your work or decide to seek the information elsewhere. Plus, for most small business people or authors, fulfilling those orders, especially for a popular product can get overwhelming. And, there’s the fact that with the proliferation of dedicated e-readers, tablets, and other devices, people read many more electronic files than paper ones. Plus, for those who need to have the information printed, a PDF file can be printed.

But, I don’t think an information product necessarily needs to be an
