About this ebook

Skating thru Hockey: A Fan's Guide to Youth, College, and the Professional Game provides the basics for understanding hockey – including the various levels, how it is played, and the basic offensive and defensive situations. It also includes a close-up look at what happens before, during, and after the game, as well as a description of some of the most common penalties and a glossary of terms you will hear from play-by-play announcers. It is written in a user-friendly format and drawn from our combined years of experience with hockey as spectator, player and college coach. We wrote this book not only because of our love and appreciation for the game of hockey, but also because of our desire for others to understand it so they can share in our enthusiasm for the game.

Sandra Caron

Sandra L. Caron is a Professor of Family Relations and Human Sexuality at the University of Maine. She has been both professionally and personally involved in college athletics. She is a graduate of the University of Maine and Syracuse University. She has served as a member of the University of Maine Athletic Advisory Board for more than a decade, and director of Athletes for Sexual Responsibility, a nationally recognized peer education program that trains student-athletes to educate others. About the Authors

    SECTION I: INTRODUCTION

    1. Why we wrote the book

We wrote this book not only because of our love and appreciation for the game of hockey, but also because of our desire for others to understand it so they can share in our enthusiasm for the game. As we looked at what literature was available, we found that many books on hockey are geared for kids who are learning to play the game, or coaches writing about their experience and how it relates to business, or autobiography/biographies about former players. We wanted to create an easy to understand guide for fans and family members of those who play the game.

Skating thru Hockey: A Fan’s Guide to Youth, College, and the Professional Game provides the basics for understanding hockey – including the various levels, how it is played, and the basic offensive and defensive situations. It also includes a close-up look at what happens before, during, and after the game, as well as a description of some of the most common penalties and a glossary of terms you will hear from play-by-play announcers. It is written in a user-friendly format and drawn from our combined years of experience with hockey as spectator, player and college coach. Note: Terms associated with hockey will be in bold.

    2. Growth of the Game

Another big reason for writing this book is that hockey is one of the fastest growing games in the world. Hockey is most popular in the colder regions of the world. Hockey has long-been regarded as the premiere sport in Canada, Finland, Russia, and Sweden. However, with the advent of indoor artificial ice rinks, hockey is spreading to warmer climates. Youth and semi-pro leagues are emerging in countries like China, Japan, Australia, and Brazil.

In the U.S., hockey has traditionally taken a backseat to baseball, football, and basketball. Today, it is spreading across the country to places like California, Texas and Florida – so naturally there are hundreds of thousands of new fans and thousands of people (both children and adults) playing the game for the first time. While traditionally seen as a game for boys and men, today women and girls are taking to the ice in unprecedented numbers. Currently, over 65,000 female players are registered with USA Hockey. Over the past two decades, player participation in USA Hockey has increased almost 150%.

The Stanley Cup Effect: The greatest increase in player participation has been seen in those states with NHL teams who have won the Stanley Cup.

As the game of hockey has grown in popularity, so has another game played on ice, sled hockey. Sometimes called sledge hockey, sled hockey allows individuals with disabilities to play the game. Players sit in a sled that has two skate blades attached underneath. Players use two shortened sticks – each with a blade on one end to pass and shoot and a metal pick on the other end
