Introduction
To talk about fear seems taboo in our current society. When I came to this conclusion I decided to investigate whether I was right and what this was due to. Then I found an article titled Why Talk About Fear from the author of Nofear (Nomiedo), in which she corroborated what I thought. This is how the author expresses the idea:
…I found out that fear was barely spoken of in the company. It was (and still is) a taboo concept. It seems as if acknowledging fear is a weakness, when deep inside it is what helps us know how to survive.
I came to this conclusion while I was writing this book, and the idea of bringing up the subject in a social network occurred to me, suggesting that everyone should tell their story of how they managed to overcome their fear and how that helped them reach goals in their lives. It is true that only some people replied but they did so with very good comments regarding their overall method to overcome fear. Nevertheless, none of them had the determination to tell about their personal story or a concrete situation they had lived.
I must recognize that the idea of fear being taboo and that we usually feel vulnerable when talking about our own fears – many times even fears from the past - did not cross my mind. The same thing happens with failure. It seems that nobody wants to talk about their failures. We usually need to pretend that everything is going well and we only feel like talking about our successes. However, acknowledging our failures can help us learn from them if they are already in the past. If we are presently going through a failure, it is useful to acknowledge it as well in order to realize that we might need to change something and move forward.
Hoping that by hiding fears they may disappear, most people would rather not face them. Unfortunately, that is a way of living that actually contributes on being dominated by our own fears, instead of really overcoming them.
People are rather willing to talk about happiness, economy, corruption, politics, movies, etc. Those subjects which do not involve our deep fears are easily brought up in any kind of conversation or article. This is possibly because these subjects do not entail deepening in individuals and bringing up their vulnerability, weaknesses, concerns and fears – things that make us feel endangered, threatened, anxious or anguished. Fear is considered a negative emotion which carries an unpleasant feeling and causes illness and restlessness. That is to say, fear is an uncomfortable concept which we would rather avoid.
As a matter of fact, there aren’t many articles about fear and how to face it, either in newspapers or magazines, which analyze in depth fear and ways to overcome fear. Moreover, there aren't many books that deal with this issue in detail and the repercussion they might have on our lives - specially having in mind that their influence is determinant in the achievement of our purposes and our quality of life. Thus the reason for this book: to contribute with a reflection that helps us create conscience of how our fears work. It is a reflection that moves us to face them once and for all and inspires us to live our – and only our – life.
This books parts from knowledge and advice that I have found regarding how to overcome fear and reach our dreams. The idea is that just by overcoming our fears we can be free to live our life and get to make our dreams come true. This reading contains my own approach, which is based on previously published articles, my own experience and what I have seen around me up until the day I am writing this work.
This reading may be useful to better understand those fears that haunt you – both the real ones and the imaginary ones – and prevent you from having a fulfilling life. Each chapter, titled after one advice, consists of a statement that the reader can take to practice to defeat his or her fears and to progress in life. Of course it’s at your will – dear reader – to decide which recommendations to follow and which not to, when to follow them and when not to, under which circumstances to follow them and when not to…
This book will definitely soak you with ideas to overcome your fears and reach your dreams, without pretending to tell you what you should think or do. The intention is that through this reading you can find the appropriate tools to feel more comfortable, peaceful and confident when handling your fears. One of the purposes of this book is also to help you regain your interior peace – an essential component which we should take care of in order to be happy. To obtain it we must opt to stop being so attentive of our fears and concerns.
In Dale Carnegie’s book, How to Stop Worrying and Start Living, he mentions a report from Dr. Harold C. Habein in which 176 executives with an average age of 44.3 were studied. The result was:
(…) slightly more than a third of these executives reported that they had suffered from at least 1 of 3 ailments peculiar to high tension living; heart disease, digestive-tract ulcers, and high blood pressure
.
Exactly one out of three executives that work in our companies has paid the high price of decreased health before age 45, caused by a job position and from handling so many concerns and fears. Is it really worth it? Is a life full of daily concerns that harm our physical and emotional well-being valid? I believe that’s not the right way of living. It really isn’t worth it to live constantly disturbed by work, health, money, love or whatever. Nothing, absolutely nothing, is worth our peace and health if it constantly provokes unhappiness.
The reason why many forget the high price they are paying - with stress, anxiety, high efforts, renouncing to free time, family life, social life, physical and emotional care, and personal self-fulfillment, is that at the beginning they thought that the commitment to their Jobs was worth it in change for security and money. Education and society have taught us the belief that we need to earn our life
, and in some point we came to accept sacrifice as a part of that life concept – admitting even its advantage.
Later insight on this has led many – including myself – to realize that no one or nothing - not even work, is worth a permanent affliction and bitterness. Sometimes we get to hold so much, up until our own physical and emotional limits, until a flash makes us see that our physical and emotional health, our time and our relationships are
