CHAPTER 1
Murder Most Foul
Olivia appeared as if from nowhere. For a second she stood and listened. The house was quiet. Her gentle walk was imperceptible as she made her way down the dimly lit staircase. The moonlight glistened off the diamond-paned windows, shimmering across the drifting snow that fell outside.
At the foot of the stairs, the light illuminated the sumptuously decorated hallway. Objects of antiquity filled every available space on the walls and ceilings.
Large glass paneled cabinets held wonders from the far corners of the globe. She paid no attention to any of them. Her eyes were fixed on the huge oak doors at the end of the cavernous hall. The ornately carved gold handles clicked open at her touch. The massive door swung open effortlessly, using some kind of air suspension system learned from the ancients. This mansion was an architectural marvel built with technology far ahead of its time, yet older than time itself.
The room she entered was a veritable museum. In the center was a huge statue of a Knight poised in battle on a magnificent steed. The black marbled figure was so precise and life-like, it seemed as if someone had frozen him in the very moment of victory while encasing him in an obsidian shell. Olivia’s white porcelain complexion contrasted the knight’s, as she gazed into his eyes. Then, while lowering her eyes, she bows her head slightly in a sign of respect. She grabs the gloved sword hand of knight and turns it outward. She places her ring into the ring on the knight’s hand and joins them. A click
is heard. The base of the statue swings out and a cover slides back to reveal documents, valuables and a small black box. She gently lifts it out.
The box is a lush velvet case with rounded edges and a gold leaf inset around the outer rim. She opens the lid slowly. A bright white light emanates from within it, blinding her. The sounds of battle surround her. Swords clanging, men fighting, horses snorting, screams in the distance fade as a booming voice, majestic in its timber, rises above all else.
…This is why I have chosen you six valiant knights…
Olivia slams the lid of the case down and the room goes silent. She recovers her demeanor and rises to leave.
She steps out into the cold night air and pauses on the veranda. Her eyes piece the darkness as she checks to see if anyone is following her. Satisfied she is alone, she quickly heads out of the front gate and makes a quick turn down an obscure alley, disappearing into the night.
A shadowy figure steps from a doorway and follows her footsteps in the snow.
Olivia proceeds down a series of twisting alleyways until she comes to a secreted bridge. She hastens across and into a small corridor between two buildings. At the end of the corridor a black coach awaits. She is oblivious to the dark figure that slides across the rooftop above as she sidles down the narrow passageway. She emerges into a back alley where the coach waits. The driver huddles against the cold and the magnificent black stallion stamps his foot impatiently as Olivia approaches. The coach door opens ominously to welcome her. The dark recesses of the cab reveal nothing. She enters nervously. A black leather gloved hand pulls the door shut. A large silver ring catches the moonlight, revealing the silver cross, engraved on its face. Olivia reaches into her cape and pulls out the black velvet box. She hands it to the strange man seated across from her in the shadows. He takes the box and opens it. There is no glow this time, no sounds of battle. He speaks in a low raspy whisper
You have done well Olivia. The master will be pleased.
Thank you, my lord.
He takes the object out of the box. He unwraps the velvet cloth that protects it to reveal a beautifully carved gold wedge-shaped piece. On its outside, hieroglyphics of some kind reflect the light.
Beautiful.
What is it?
A piece of history, a step towards power
The horse whinnies and stomps his foot.
On the precipice above, a figure signals to the others.
"Incompetent fool! You’ve been followed!
No, it can’t be. I was careful! I swear!
He taps a signal to the driver. The carriage lurches forward. The horse rears up and takes off.
Hidden adversaries spring into action! Two hooded men jump in front of the racing horse to try and stop it. They are mowed down. The coach corners a tight alley, a hooded man, perched on a ledge, leaps onto the roof. He makes his way towards the driver, only to discover he is gone!
The coach veers around a bend, taking it on two wheels, tossing the man on the roof over the side. He hangs on with one hand as he tries to get a foothold. The gloved hand emerges from the shrouded window. A large silver dagger is clenched murderously in its grip. It slashes at the exposed chest of the dangling man. He screams and lets go. He smashes into the ground.
Another hooded man fires a pistol at the horse. It is hit but bowls him over and continues on, blood spilling from its wound. Ahead, a barricade has been erected with wagons and crates. Two hooded men grimly await the coach from presumed safety behind it. The horse defiantly forges on, nostrils flaring, powerful legs churning, kicking up the white powered snow. An eerie silence falls upon the scene.
The men take aim as the stallion makes a magnificent leap up and over the barricade. The men scatter as the coach crashes into it, separating itself from the horse and smashing the crates into shrapnel of wood and glass. They spew their contents into the wind. Papers swirl around the coach as it sits wedged amongst the debris.
The hooded men move in on their wounded prey. One of them signals to the others to halt. He points to the snow around the coach. There are various skid marks from the coach and hoof prints from the horse.
No footprints, they’re still inside.
He cocks his pistol and approaches the coach slowly. He opens the door….Olivia’s limp body falls into his arms. Around her eyes is an eerie green glow.
It’s empty! Search the area, they must be nearby!
They pull the girl out and carry her
