A Lesson in Power
Cold drops of rain wormed their way past the tightly drawn collar, chilling him to the bone. Hieronymus hunched his shoulders and shivered. He shook wet dangling strands of hair out of his face and peered through the driving rain for any sign of shelter. He was alone, cold, hungry, hunted.
Moreover, lost as well.
His cloak was not designed for hard travel, doing little to protect him from the wind and rain. A better cloak was the farthest thing from his mind in the middle of an escape attempt. He flinched at the memory. Kaevan guiding him away from Huntress Ilarhia control after days of captivity, the frenzied race to freedom, and the bitter taste of that victory, Kaevan’s death.
He shook his head again; unsure if it were rain or tears he flung away. He used a wet sleeve to wipe his nose and patted his mount in reassurance.
There’s shelter here somewhere,
he said. He urged his mount to a walk. Let’s find it.
He was following a faint trail he hoped would lead where he wanted to go, the city of Duer-lorn. He knew it lay somewhere to the southeast and several riding days away but after hours in the pouring rain, he was no longer sure which direction his plodding mount walked. The heavy canopy overhead prevented him from seeing the sun, just as it had hidden the coming deluge.
Another shiver shook his gaunt frame, his thin garments soaked through completely. The water had even dripped into his boots as he squeezed water from between chilled toes.
He remembered his father teaching him numerous means of identifying their course while at sea.
