Byron Gordon

Byron Gordon grew up in the rural Eastern Shore of Maryland, USA. One of six children, he soon discovered his love of reading, ranging from the clever humor of P.G. Wodehouse to the epic fantasy of Tolkien to the fast paced science fiction of Timothy Zahn. Fed on this widely varied diet, his imagination blossomed and he began to write, desiring to create worlds and adventures of his own. After realizing the bleak financial prospects of an aspiring writer trying to break into the fiction realm, Byron enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. He spent an extra week in Coast Guard Boot Camp (Cape May, NJ) for writing during the breaks between classes. After Boot Camp he traveled to California for training in radio communications. Following the completion of his training, he spent three years on a Coast Guard Cutter, interdicting and repatriating illegal migrants. He currently is still on active duty and plans search and rescue efforts on the east coast of the USA.Despite the intense, and often hectic, schedule that military life entails, Byron has continued to write in his free time. While writing a complete novel still proves elusive, he has composed multiple short stories and a small amount of poetry. In the spring of 2011, he started publishing his writings electronically and now has a fair number of short stories and poetry available online in a variety of formats.

    Stalked

The fan creaking overhead was supposed to have four blades but there were only three. The bracket reached out for the fourth but the blade was gone, broken or rotted away. It was the imbalance created by the missing blade that made the fan creak. Either that or it was just old and used up.

I shifted to the front edge of my folding chair and looked at the man behind the steel desk with the peeling green paint. He was short, his cheeks were pinched thin, and there was the white crease of an old scar over one eyebrow. He had the bushiest eyebrows I’d ever seen, overshadowing his eyes until I couldn’t be sure of their color. He wore a white oxford shirt, the collar stained yellow with sweat, the top button undone, striped tie loosely knotted about his neck. The sleeves were rolled up just below his elbows. He dressed like someone going on the set of a low budget cop show.

So what do you think? I asked him.

Stop that, please. He steepled his hands. The backs of them were covered in coarse hair.

    Stop what?

Stop shaking. He looked pointedly at my left knee, which was bobbing up and down to a jittery rhythm.

Oh. With an effort I forced my foot and knee to be still. Sorry.

It’s distracting. He paused, as if to give me an opportunity to speak again, but I’d already said sorry. No need to say it again.

You’re obviously nervous. Something is getting to you whether it is real or imagined. Are you sure it’s not just lack of sleep or stress from work? The short hairy man speared me with his eyes.

Are you my therapist now? I know what I think. I want to know what you think. I want you to investigate.

I just want to make sure. I like satisfied clients, not ripped off ones.

I’m sure. If you like I’ll guarantee you a review on Yelp, praising how honest you are.

I’ve never been fond of yelping, he smiled. Aside from frequent feelings of being watched, you have no further evidence?

My wife feels constantly nervous. And she’s started having nightmares. Of course, that means nothing to the cops. Who's supposed to protect us if not them? That’s what I’d like to know! I pay my taxes!

He ignored my frustrated outburst. "The police like evidence. You have a short supply of it. If there is any to find, I’ll dig it up. When
