QuikGuide to Independent Travel - Gordon Rogowitz
Introduction
Independent travel is incredibly rewarding. Rather than being shown attractions by a tour company that allots only a limited time at each location, you will be able to stay as long as you want at your favorite destinations, moving on when you choose to. In this way, you will enhance your enjoyment and gain a far greater knowledge of the places you visit. Nobody but you will be calling the shots, determining when and where you visit and how long you stay. Want to admire the statue of the Venus de Milo at the Louvre for an hour? Fine. Want to stay an extra two days at a beautiful beach in the Caribbean? Absolutely! Furthermore, by traveling independently you will have innumerable opportunities to talk with the locals and gain a deeper understanding of their lives.
Independent travel is incredibly fun once you know the ropes. This guide will give you all the knowledge and resources you need to travel with confidence, even in regions off the beaten track. The guide explores methods of gathering information about travel destinations, visas and passports, types of luggage, communicating while abroad, dealing with money, selecting lodging, making reservations, traveling on a budget, and visiting foreign countries where you don’t know the language. It also includes travel tips for women travelers, suggested ways to interact with people of different lands, and the basics of travel medicine.
The guide contains a wealth of information on traveling in lesser developed destinations, including Southeast Asia, India, Central America, Africa, and South America. Plus I’ve included information on travel in Europe, North America, Japan and China. Finally, I point you to a variety of books and websites where you can gain further information.
Is it Safe to Travel Independently?
This is often the first question people ask. The answer is an emphatic Yes!
Actually independent travel is often safer than being on a tour. For one thing, the throngs of relatively wealthy people exiting from a tour bus or cruise boat make excellent targets for pickpockets. The facts are crystal clear on this. Simply dressed independent travelers are rarely hassled. In contrast, if you are walking around flashing gold jewelry and a Gucci handbag, you are more likely to be targeted by pickpockets.
So if you’re considering independent travel, all you need to do is dress modestly. Also be cognizant of where you place your belongings. If you put a pocket book or camera bag down at a restaurant, be sure to wrap one of the straps around one of your arms or legs. In doing so, the risk of thievery will be negligible. I can’t tell you how many people I’ve met that have stopped for a drink, had one too many, and then discovered that their camera was missing. It’s not that the world is full of crooks. Rather, the world is full of naïve people. Don’t be
