Prologue
Mid October
The caring citizens of the peaceful village of Solitude, nestled in western Pennsylvania’s Amish country, gathered daily at the old building that served as post office/deli and general store. Everyone just called the place ‘Thelma’s’ in honor of the postmistress and proprietor. The numbers of those who gathered had grown since Thelma’s granddaughter Lucy, a senior at Penn State University, had been reported missing by her roommate. Thelma was a pencil thin, no nonsense lifelong resident of Solitude whose greatest joy in life was helping her grandchildren grow and become successful in the world. She looked much older than her sixty years as each passing day brought no news about Lucy’s disappearance.

The three had gotten to know Lucy well over the past summer when one of her former boyfriends, Eric Bennett, had been found responsible for the death of a visiting college student from Zimbabwe. Eric resented the fact that Lucy had gotten close to Richard. Eric also tried to swindle some uncut diamonds from Richard that he’d smuggled out of his home country. Eric ended up getting killed in a motorcycle accident and was never brought to trial. To Lucy’s surprise, she learned that she was the beneficiary of a million dollar life insurance policy purchased by Eric when they were dating. Lucy, a kind hearted person, donated the proceeds to relief efforts in Zimbabwe.
The phone call came shortly after ten a.m. on a cool crisp Wednesday morning. Dana and Fannie caught Thelma as they saw her frail body collapse. Dana grabbed
