Early in 2009 my Auntie Val, for whom I was flower girl in 1946, was terminally ill. A wish she had before she died was to have a helicopter ride (see front cover photo). It was a joyous experience for her to fly over Lake Taupo one beautiful day and for me to witness this. This was indicative of her spirit and courage. I had the privilege a few months later of officiating with my brother at her funeral.
I would like to acknowledge the two most significant people who have supported me each month as I prepared the Touchstone articles and met the deadlines. They have been my patient husband James
Millar and Hilary Childs of Presbyterian Support for gracious secretarial skills. Also other friends and family who have helped with my technology deficits.
I am grateful to Presbyterian Support for the 23 years of employment which has brought me such opportunity, fulfilment and deep satisfaction.

Introduction
I am grateful for the opportunity I have had to write articles for Touchstone over four years. It has been a joy as well as a challenge to meet monthly deadlines. The invitation to contribute to Touchstone followed the publishing of my 2001 book Growing in Age.
When the vision for the book was conceived it seemed impossible. I had never considered myself capable of writing a book. Bringing it to birth was hard labour at times. I am grateful to the midwives who supported and encouraged me. The title acknowledges the increasing ageing population, but also the journey of ageing which many experience as a journey of discovery and celebration of life.
Society’s attitudes to ageing have tended to relegate older people to the periphery of society with the label the elderly. Myths, stereotypes and negative attitudes have been very insidious and damaging, and they have contributed to many injustices.
Justice, love and compassion are part of the heritage I claim as a Christian. At its best, this heritage is about the dignity, worth and value of all people, whatever their age, gender, ethnicity or culture. My offerings in writing have hopefully been a small contribution to these values.
A deeper understanding of people through all the stages of ageing is needed. Many older people face the greatest challenges of their lives. Equally important is the need to encourage people to value and respect themselves and their roles in families and society. There are choices to be made along the way and people have to take responsibility for their choices about life, relationships and participation.
Wise and visionary older people have made a lasting contribution to humankind through the ages. History is being written now as older people develop their wisdom and skills and search for ways to make a difference in the world.
New Zealand is a small country with a very important role in international affairs. We cannot afford to be concerned only for our own survival as a country or as individuals. The vision of a legacy for future generations can give meaning and purpose to the lives of older people and in partnership with younger members of society help to create a better world.
The opportunities offered me over the years have highlighted for me
