Introduction
We could do that, it will be fun!
They said.
Go on, get it booked.
So began my sleepless nights in old buildings looking for ghosts.
---
The interest in Chingle Hall, an eight-hundred year old building in the County of Lancashire in the North West of England, began with a feature on a local television programme with a presenter staying overnight at the Hall as part of a charity fundraising event. Having read about the Hall in various books I was intrigued by the idea of spending a night and so, after the television programme planted the idea of staying at the Hall, I mentioned this over a few drinks in a Wigan pub whilst out with friends. They jumped at the chance.
Other than school visits or the occasional trip with parents most of us had never really visited a supposed haunted hall, and definitely had never spent a night in one. This was our chance. Little did I know at the time that this was to prove to be the first of countless nights of hunting for ghosts that would stretch over the next seventeen years, and still continues, creating far more questions than answers but with excitement, humour and a few scares along the way.
Please note, throughout the following narrative I have changed the names of individuals involved. Some of them I have unfortunately lost touch with over the years, some may not wish to be mentioned in print and some would expect to be paid…
After a bit of discussion and research we arranged to raise funds for a local school for under-privileged children and started to get sponsors (we went on to raise several hundred pounds that were used to buy new playground equipment). I hit the books, found a contact number for Chingle and arranged with the then owners for our intrepid group to spend a night at the Hall. Over the following weeks there was a sense of anticipation as the date of the stay approached. None of us knew what to expect. Would anything happen? Would we see a ghost? Would we survive the night? Would we get overly dramatic?

The First Night
Finally the night arrived. Stays at the Hall were limited by the owners to a maximum of eight, we were soon to find out why, and so eight hardy volunteers were picked, cars were loaded with supplies and we set off to find the Hall.
Unfortunately the Hall was not sign posted, but after a detour through a farm-yard having taken the wrong side road, we eventually found the right turning for the Hall. The road took us past fields and into a fairly remote area of Lancashire. Other than a small farm the Hall was the only building in sight.
The name Chingle Hall, at least to us, had conjured up images of a stately home, large and imposing. Stories in books about the Great Hall and Chapel had taken nothing away from this image. As we parked up we were quickly forced to rethink our ideas.
