First and foremost, I want to dedicate this book to God and to give Him all of the glory. I could not live a moment without Jesus in my life. He is my Savior, Redeemer, Deliverer, and Friend. He is the reason that I am alive and in my right mind today and that I am not in a mental institution or addicted to drugs. I want my life to be a testimony of His goodness, faithfulness, grace and love.
Next, I want to thank my family for loving me no matter what. In my darkest moments, I was a mean and ugly person. I hated myself, my life, and everything around me. I saw no end to my pain and I was lost in hopelessness and in utter despair. My family stayed with me and loved me unconditionally and for that, I am forever grateful. I especially want to thank my parents, Dennis & Sharon Delisle, for believing in me and for giving me a firm foundation in God. Dad, thank you for encouraging me to write this book. Mom, thank you for your many hours of reading and editing every draft. You have and always will be a great source of strength to me. I love you with all my heart! To my brother Dennis, who always keeps me laughing, my sis-in-love, Lori, for all her help and great advice, and my favorite nephews, Cooper, Joseph, and Jayden, who always bring me such joy! Special thanks to my extended family for their unconditional love, and a big shout out to Uncle Tuck and Aunt Sherree for continually providing me with gifts cards for my chai teas while I wrote this book! You guys are awesome!
My utmost thanks and appreciation to God for putting a woman like Diana Gaddey in my life. She was the first one who knew my struggles and looked beyond them to see my potential. She got down into the valleys with me and helped me to see my way out. My life is forever changed because of her unconditional love for me and her commitment to serve God. She has been and will forever be a mentor, a spiritual mother, and a friend. I've gleaned so much from her wisdom and mentorship. Diana, thank you so much for the countless hours you put towards the drafts of this book, for all of the revisions, and for all of the phone calls through this process. May God give you back one hundred fold. Love you lots!
My sincerest thanks go out to Dr. Elaine Newkirk. Without her, this book might never have come to fruition. Because of her suggestion to write a curriculum on stress management, this book had a foundation. She saw potential in me that I didn't even see in myself and has always encouraged me to reach farther than I would have on my own. From the beginning, her friendship has been strategic and God appointed in my life, and for that I am extremely grateful. I am thankful for her wisdom and insight as well. Elaine, thank you for your time spent on the rough draft and the advice. Love and hugs!
Words cannot express how much I lean on, cherish, and need the friends that God has put in to my life. Without them, I would not be who I am today, especially my Tampa girls and to those of you in other states. Those of you who have stood by me when times were tough, those of you who have prayed with me when my heart was broken, those who have made me laugh when I wanted to cry, those who have encouraged me to carry on, those who have jumped in the valley with me, those who have carried me, and those who have loved me unconditionally, without judgment or criticism. To you, I am forever grateful. I could not make it through this journey called life without your love, strength, and support. I give you my deepest thanks. A big shout out goes to Chris (Pup) for taking the time to edit my final draft. Thanks!
Believe it or not, I am also thankful for my enemies. Thank you for the pain, the hurt, and the rejection that you have caused, for it caused me to lean more heavily on Jesus and on those that He placed in my life to strengthen me. Thank you for the many nights that you caused me to be on my face before the Lord in tears, drawing upon His strength. Thank you for doubting the greatness of God on the inside of me, for it caused me to pursue and solidify that greatness for His Glory.
Special thanks to Eli Blyden of Crunch Time Graphics for his talented cover design! Thank you for taking my thoughts and implementing them on paper! Special thanks also goes out to Luigi Martinello of Luigi Photography and Juan Ruiz of Ziur Photography for the amazing cover photos. All of you guys are such a blessing to me!
Thank you to the person who has decided to read this book. I hope that you take the time to work through the reflection questions at the end of each chapter. They were designed to provoke thought, and to help you on your journey to discover who you were destined to be. Today is a new day and you have the opportunity to discover the greatness that life has to offer. I hope you walk away strengthened for your journey and that you are able to pass the things you have learned in this book on to others, paying it forward. May there be a spring in your step, and hope in your heart.
In His Grace,
Annette
Chapter One
A Balancing Act
Life throws us bad pitches and it is a continual process of learning how to handle them. I am a female that loves sports and I can associate life to the game of baseball. In the game of baseball, as in the game of life we have many choices. One of the best examples of choices in the game of baseball is the pitch. We can either choose to lay off of a pitch because it is out of the strike zone, or we can duck because the pitch is coming right at us, or we can give it our best shot and knock it out of the park. Unfortunately, in life and in baseball, we do not
