    Although the story is focused on Silas, an individual, the role of the society is also significant. The theme of the individual versus the community is quite significant in the novel.

    Silas is the title character, but the story is very much about the community of Raveloe in which Silas lives.

    A kind of tension prevails between the community and Silas all through the story. He spends a few years in total isolation, but with the changing circumstances he becomes a part of the community. The author seems to be exploring the relationship between an individual and the surrounding community he lives in.

      Chapter One: Introduction

      Silas Marner or The Weaver of Raveloe was the third novel written by George Eliot. The book was first published in the year 1861.

      On the surface it appears to be a very simple story of a linen weaver, but the story has very strong realism. It deals very strongly with the issues like religion, industrialization, and community.

      Silas Marner is considered to be one of the best novels written by George Eliot. The author seems to have used many themes and subjects from her own life experiences.

      Silas loses religious faith. It is based on Eliot’s own struggle with her faith. The story is set in the vanishing English countryside. Eliot had also expressed her concern over the loss of countryside, and rapidly developing industry in its place.

      The issues of class and family seem to have been inspired from the author’s own life. It seems that Eliot has used the narrator to express her own views. It seems to be her own voice to a great extent.

      On the surface, the story seems to be very personal, but the issues concerning family, faith, and class have given it a universal appeal.

      When it was published, the English society and institutions were going through very rapid transformation.

      Chapter Two: Characters

      Silas Marner

      Silas Marner is the title character of the novel. He is a linen weaver by profession, a very miser character.

      He happens to have been cast out of Lantern Yard by his treacherous friend William Dane.

      He, finally, over the period of time, succeeds in accumulating a small fortune, but it is stolen by Dunstan Cass.

      For all the adversities in his life, he stands firm. When young Eppie arrives, Silas finds his faith and virtue.

      Godfrey Cass

      Godfrey Cass happens to be the eldest son of the local squire. He is blackmailed by hid dissolute brother Dunstan over his secret marriage to Molly.

      After the death of Molly, he feels relieved, but he comes to realize that he must pay for his wrongdoing.

      Dunstan Cass

      Dunstan Cass is the greedy brother of Godfrey. He drinks a lot and manipulates people. He happens to be
