To the one who walks the path of life with me, my wife June.

    Chapter One The Calling Stars

The first starships were unsafe. The fire and thunder when they blew themselves into frigid eternity claimed many lives. There were never any survivors.

Regardless of the fatal statistics, the Fire and Thunder Spacers laugh at the risk as they lift their glasses in solemn salute. When asked why they continue to star travel, their reply is always the same, They call me.

Two people who hear the stars are Douglas Elwood and Rebecca Thrush.

    Douglas, I’m worried.

Why, Rebecca? Is it about our forthcoming wedding?

No. There’s something wrong with the ship. The engines coughed a few moments ago. Did you hear them?

Yes, I did. And you’re worried about that? Come on, honey, relax, calm down. Come over here and sit with me. I’ll pour you a cup of coffee. Why, we’ve ridden in this old star burnished bucket for months and nothing’s happened. In fact, the ship’s performance has been perfect, a straight 4.0. And last touchdown, the inspectors examined every square inch of the engine’s pile system and gave it a passing grade.

Were crew people in the engine room with the inspectors? I heard they weren’t. Douglas, I was the officer-of-the-deck when they came onboard. As they made lewd remarks to me I smelled alcohol. Two of the three staggered, the third walked with his eyes closed until the captain met them.

Rebecca, it’s not unusual for the skipper to do that. He probably escorted them to the engine room.

No, he didn’t. Cabin boy Mosby usually keeps me informed about the ship’s scuttlebutt. He told me the inspectors were drinking with the captain in the captain’s quarters. He was ordered to bring them four bottles of whiskey. Darling, I think a lot of the safety inspection wasn’t done, or possibly not done at all.

What you need is a big hug, a long lasting kiss, and a body massage, not necessarily in that order and right now. Gorgeous lady, I told you to calm down. You’re too young to be so nervous. My darling forever love, home is only three months away. Then we’ll meet my parents and have a huge wedding and the biggest cake Earth’s ever seen. So let’s have no more worry about the ship. Nothing is going to happen to us. We’re invincible. Remember that, my love. We are invincible.

The next day, during the 0800 watch, the ship exploded. Millions of shards spread outward into space along with the remains of the ship’s crew. For them, star travel ended. Or had it? What about thoughts?
