About this ebook

it was another very cold night for the men at the end of the road besides the doc’s house.
harry. bill and dougie, we're standing at the wall outside the old house? harry said. ‘let’s go inside the house lads its freezing out here.’ ‘oh i don’t know about that said dougie, have you forgotten about the two lads that were here last night.’ ‘well you can stay out here if you like but I am going out of this cold.’ ‘yes and I am going with you said bill.’ the two men went into the house but dougie stayed outside.
it was about twenty minutes later when harry and Bill heard Dougie scream. Bill went to the door and looked out to where dougie was last seen. bill went to the bottom of the stairs and shouted up. ‘harry you o-k.’ ‘yes but watch out for them bastards, and don’t go outside.’
harry moved to the window and looked out but could see nothing. It was a dark night. he stood there for two or three minutes. when he saw a red flash down the stairwell, he shouted. ‘bill.’
no answer. he started to panic. he looked up to the roof. he could see stars in the sky where a hole about three feet wide was. he looked around the room then took the old chair over to the hole. then stood on it, he was about two feet short. panic was getting a hold of him now. he looked around the room again. he could see a set of old drawers in the corner. he dragged them over to the hole then he put the chair on top of them. then he climbed up to the top. this time his head and shoulders were above the roof. he put his gun on the roof and climbed through the hole. then he lay down and grabbed for the chair but could not reach it. he put his gun through the hole the gun had a webbing strap. he hooked the strap over the arm of the chair but when he came to pull it through the hole he could not get a hold of it, because he had the gun in the wrong hand, he lifted up the
chair and managed to get hold. then the strap on his gun got caught on a roof tile and his gun fell to the floor below. this made him even more nervous. he heard something in the room below. he was frantic now he took hold of the chair and put his foot against the bottom bar then pulled with all his might until the leg came off his hands. he now had a club as a weapon. he sat by the whole waiting.
when the thing put its head through the hole and started to put its arms through. that’s when harry hit it over the head with all his strength. The alien with a scream withdrew its head from the hole. then about half a minute later it started to come through the hole again. harry could see he had not done much damage to its head. In panic he looked around then his hand fell on a loose roof tile. It was one of the flat gray kind.

    The Beginning

An object shaped like a cigar was speeding towards the Earth at a tremendous speed, on board the object was a strange group of lizard like Aliens, The Aliens had been planning an attack on this fertile planet Earth for some considerable time, The reason for their assault was simple FOOD, AND THEY WERE CARNIVOROUS THEY NEEDED MEAT TO SURVIVE, Now they looked through their very powerful telescopes, and they had no emotions on their green scale like faces.

They had estimated that the time of their arrival would be when the side of the planet they wanted to land on would be in darkness.

    Chapter 1

It all began on Saturday 17th September. It was a bright autumn day but a little chilly.

David was the owner of a small transport company. The firm deliveRed up and down the British mainland. He didn’t make a lot of money, but it was still a good living for him, he had two seven-ton vans and a one five ton chilled van. Which did five nightly runs to Manchester?

His office was just off Blanford Street in Newcastle upon Tyne.

The time was eleven forty five. David was just about to call it a day when the office door opened and Tom Fox walked in. Tom had been with David for eight

Years and when David was not around Tom looked after the office and the other two drivers that David has on the books.

‘Hello Boss I was just about to shove off when I remembeRed that Bill won’t be able to do his run on Monday night, because he has to attend a meeting with the headmaster of his boys school, so I dropped in to tell you that I would cover his run, it means that you will have to do the Durham run on Tuesday morning for me, is that Ok with you Boss.’

Bill Thompson made the night run five night’s a week from Newcastle to Manchester. ‘That’s fine Tom I have nothing on until eleven thirty Tuesday morning, and I will be back with loads of time for that, ‘By the way Tom did you get the new time sheets from Thompsons and Bell?’

‘Yes Boss I picked them up on Thursday morning I put them in the cabinet,’

    ‘Good man.’

‘Jimmy at Thompson’s wants’ to know when you will need some new invoice sheets. He thinks we will be getting low on them. And he would like to know in plenty of time, as you ran out last time; he had a job and a half to get them ready for you.’

‘It’s a good job you brought that up, I’d better take a look I think Jimmy may be right.’

‘Did you get the note I left for you.’

    ‘No.’

‘Well a firm up at the west end wants’ to give us a try out, they want a load to be deliveRed to Liverpool three times a week, the only thing is the load must be down to the Liverpool dock’s before four in the afternoon, but the good thing is we can load up any time after six in the morning. Which will give us loads of time to get down to Liverpool.’

‘That’s great so we can cash in on this run, if it takes off we might have to see about getting another van driver’.

Tom turned to go but turned back to face David, ‘are you off in the woods again tonight, I see you have your new In-fra-Red camera with you.’ David liked to think he was a zoologist. But he was just an amateur who loved animals; he often stayed out all night at weekends. That’s when Julie would allow him too; he would stay out for hours just to get a picture of an owl or maybe a fox, and anything that might come his way.

Yes Tom when I was out last Saturday night I found a badger set, and it had recently been used, so I thought I would try to get a picture or two tonight, that’s if Julie has made no other plans.’

Julie was the wife of David. She was small but a very good-looking woman. And David was a good six feet tall and well made and he was just starting to get a bald patch on the top of his head. They had two children, Natalie who was eleven years of age. And Scott, who was eight years old.

‘I think Julie wants to take a trip into Otterbridge this afternoon with the kids, so I think its best I take them in myself, it might put Julie in a good mood for tonight.’

‘Well Boss I’ll be on my way; I’ll see you on Tuesday afternoon, if all is well so-long Boss.’

David locked up the office and drove his car though Newcastle to the A696. Which would take him to Northumberland and home to the farm he and Julie bought five years ago.

The farm was in dire states when they took it over but it came with a lot of land and they got it very cheap.

The farm lay about six miles Northwest of Otterbridge, between Hoarsely and Rochester. The farm was in the Northumberland national park and the nearest farm was about one mile away.

David drove straight to the local newsagents where he had ordeRed the monthly copy of the amateur Photographer; he got loads of tips from this magazine.

He parked the car at the curb and went into the shop where John Lewis Hobbs the owner was standing behind the counter.

David said, ‘Hello to Jonty, that’s what he liked to be called. David asked Jonty if his magazine was in yet. ‘Hello David, yes your mags in, did you hear the ruckus this morning.’

‘No Jonty should I have done.’

‘Well I would have thought you would have heard it, it came from your neck of the woods.’

    ‘Hear what Jonty.’

‘It was about five o’clock this morning I was just opening when I heard such a bang and then such a crashing sound.’

‘Did anyone in the village hear it?’

‘Nobody yet but I’ll ask all who come into the shop today, I asked the local bobby your mate Jim Dawson, if he had heard any reports about it, but he said so far I was the only one to hear it in the village.’

‘What do you think it could be said David.’

‘I don’t have a clue what it was.’

David turned to the door saying I’ll see you in the Lion tomorrow and buy you a pint.’

‘O-k I’ll hold you to that if I can get, but the wife was on about going to Newcastle on Sunday, so I will have to see, if not I’ll take a rain check on that David.’

‘See you later Jonty but the offer still stands if you can make it.’

He got into his car and drove the last six miles to his home to Rose Farm.

When he pulled into the drive Scott came running out of the back door excited to see his Dad. ‘Hello Daddy, Mummy’s taking us into town to get a hamburger and chips.’ This was why Scott was so excited, he had been collecting Dinosaur models from the burger shop that gave a model with every kiddie’s meal, and he only needed one more to finish off his collection.

‘Hi Scott I think I will take you all into town today.’

‘That’s great Dad.’ And he turned and ran back into the house to tell Julie.

When David enteRed the room Julie was looking at him with downcast eyes. ‘And what are you up to volunteering to take us into town, I know you’re up to something, anyhow your dinner is in the oven. That’s if you still want it.’

‘No darling I won’t have it that’s because I told Scott I would buy him a hamburger.’ Julie was putting the kettle on she said, ‘Oh yes Scott’s been excited all morning because of the models.’

‘I bet I know where Natalie is; I bet she is watching kiddie’s programs.’ He went into the T-V room and said,’ Hello darling what my girl been up to this morning.’

‘Hello Dad, just been watching T-V as usual.’

‘O-k darling but we will be going to Otterbridge in about twenty minutes.’

Julie made coffee for them, and they took it into the garden, ‘Well pet I think we may have a new contract up at the West End of Newcastle, if it comes off you might get your little car you have been wanting.’

    ‘That’s great darling.’

After drinking his coffee David went into the house to change into something a bit more relaxing.

They all went out into the autumn sunshine, as they walked down the drive to their car, Julie said to David, ‘It’s about time you swept up the leaves, they are all over the path.’

‘O-k pet I’ll do it tomorrow.’

‘Oh I bet you will she said, with a little laugh, and where will you be tonight.’

They all got into the car and David drove down to Otterbridge. The journey only took about twenty minutes.

Julie told David that she would go to the supermarket first, and then they would go to the burger shop.

David said, he would go to the library to see if he could get a book on the life of Badgers, because Jonty told him they had books on Badgers in the zoological section.

He told Julie that he would meet them in twenty minutes.

Outside the burger shop, he walked to the library and went in. He was browsing through the books on animals, when he spotted Doctor Pennywell, he was a Doctor of Science at Newcastle university, he was a good friend of David’s, and his hobby was the same as his, that’s why he wasn’t surprised to see him in the zoological section of the library.

When the Doctor looked up from the book he had in his hand, he smiled and said,.

‘Hello old man what are you after this time.’

‘Hello Doc a book on Badgers, last Saturday night I was in Corby woods. And I came across a Badgers set, so I thought I would try to get one or two pictures of them tonight, would you like to come Doc.’ The Doctor looked up, ‘I would love to come David; I would like to get a picture or two myself.’

‘Yes Doc I’d love to have your company tonight.’

‘O-k David now what were you looking for again, oh yes Badgers well I know just the book for you, now let me see, yes here it is, this man knows his Badgers David.’ Doc handed him a book, The Life of the Badger by Peter Henderson. ‘A local chap but he does know a thing or two about Badgers. Where did you say you found the set.’

    ‘Corby woods Doc.’

‘Oh yes I used to go there in my younger days, what time are you thinking of going out to the woods tonight.’

‘About eight would be a good time, I’ll pick you up at your place about seven forty five, then we will drive over to Pegs Lane and walk the rest of the way through the fields, if that’s
