About this ebook
Jack and the others started to laugh then Jack said ‘Oh Billy have you got a crush on our doctor’.
‘Well sir you could call it that but I think it’s because every doctor we have had on these trips have always been ugly old men, now I’d better get back the skipper might need me’.
They were all lying around the dining room trying to get some sleep but try as they would. Sleep would not come it was about five o’clock in the morning when the door was flung open the wind was howling into the room then the Captain and Billy came in they had a job to shut the door again.
The Captain walked over to the serving counter and said to Adrian ‘Have you any coffee on the stove Adrian’.
The chef just nodded then said ‘Go sit down skipper and I’ll bring a couple of cups over you must be done in’.
The Captain turned around and he saw that every one there had come to life.
He said ‘Hello everybody I am so sorry about your holiday but I can't control the weather Now you must listen to me Billy here said. That he has spotted an island ahead of us and I know that I could not see it but after sailing with Billy for a number of years I can trust what he says because Billy has very good eyesight.
So now it comes to this, and what I am about to say please ladies don’t be afraid it’s only a precaution we are going to bring a life jacket light these we will fit to your life jackets including me. What I need now is a couple of men to join me and Billy. To go to the life saving locker and bring some back here because Billy and I can't carry all in this storm you see with myself there are seventeen people on board and to carry that many in this storm will take more than the two of us. But Billy and I have rigged up a rope along the deck which we can pull ourselves along.
The two men that come with us will wear these two belts you can see the belts have a hook in the centre that will be hooked onto the rope rig that way you won't be washed over the side have I any takers for the job’.
Jack and Bill stood up with about three more men.
The Captain just picked the two men nearest to him it was George and Richard.
The Captain said thank you every one now ladies don’t forget it’s just a precaution.
The four men went through the door and they started to struggle to close the door behind them.
Jack and Bill rushed over and took hold of the door and they got it shut they were just at the open door for a couple of seconds but they were soaked to the skin.
When they returned to the table June said ‘I think you two should go see Adrian and ask him if there was any way to dry you off.
This they did and Adrian said ‘Come into the kitchen and I will fix you up’.
When they went into the kitchen Adrian took them to a big oven and said ‘The ovens are on gas so if you strip off I’ll bung your gear into the oven and in no time they will be bone dry’.
When they got back to the table they found a pot of boiling hot coffee waiting for them.
They were sitting drinking the coffee when the Captain and the three men came back and the same thing happened again.
When they had deposited the life jacket lights on the floor the Captain said ‘Now listen everyone, Molly here will demonstrate how to fix the lights to the jackets so please watch how Molly does it thank you’.

CHAPTER 1
Jack and his wife June sat eating breakfast on a Saturday morning in September, June said ‘What are we going to do this week-end pet have you got anything planned’.
‘No June but we could go down to the new garden center because as you know I have always wanted a tree in my garden’.
‘Oh and where would you plant this tree, if I’m not mistaken we have talked about a tree before and you could not decide where to put the tree. If I remember correctly you were going to put it in the center of the garden and you know that is where I hang out my washing don’t you’.
‘Yes well my pet I think I have come up with a good plan, what I will do is remove the small garden shed at the bottom end of the garden and plant the tree there’.
‘Oh yes and what do we do with the two bikes that we keep their’.
‘Well now that’s easy I will put the small shed behind the garage’.
‘Oh yes that might work’.
‘Ok then we will go about ten o’clock Bob next door reckons it’s the best time of the year to transplant a tree’.
‘Well we can kill two birds with one stone you see I want to look at some garden furniture our furniture is on its last legs don’t you think’.
‘Yes maybe your right pet’.
It was about ten minutes later when June heard the postman at the front door.
She walked to the door and picked up a brown envelope she took it into the kitchen where Jack was reading the morning paper.
When she walked into the room Jack looked up and said ‘What have you got for me June?’
‘I don’t know it will more than likely be a bill of some sort or other’.
‘Here give it to me or just throw it in the bin’.
‘Don’t be silly you can’t just throw it in the bin you don’t know what it might be’.
‘Well then give it to me and we shall find out if my rich uncle has left me a fortune in his will’.
She handed him the envelope and said ‘I hope you are a rich man but don’t build your hopes up will you’.
She went into the front room laughing.
Jack opened the envelope and took out a sheet of paper but at a glance he knew that it is not an advertisement he unfolded the sheet and began to read.
Then he stood up and shouted to June to come in.
When she came in she said ‘What’s up with you?
‘It’s the letter pet do you know what it is’.
‘No but I bet you're going to tell me’.
‘Oh yes well I might just keep it to myself if that’s your attitude’.
‘Oh come on then what’s in the letter that’s so important’.
‘Well pet do you remember about two months ago I filled in a prize quiz at the red lion’.
‘Yes it was that one about old Hollywood movies’.
‘Well my pet I won one of the ten prizes’.
‘Oh well what have we won’.
‘Well it seems we have won a holiday on a luxury boat trip’.
‘That’s great I have always wanted to go on a cruise’.
‘There’s just one snag’.
‘And what might that be I thought it too good to be true’.
‘Well it might not be a snag it all depends on my boss if he will let us go or not you see it’s in two weeks time and as you know I have had my holidays for this year’.
‘Well maybe not Gordon is a good understanding boss he might say yes’.
‘We will have to wait until Monday to find out we still have seven days to telephone them to take their offer or not’.
They went down to the local garden center and Jack got his tree which the man said that they would deliver on the next day which was Sunday and June got a set of four chairs and a table and two Son loungers.
Then on Monday morning as Jack was leaving for work June said ‘Have a nice day pet but remember to phone me as soon as you hear what Gordon has to say’.
‘Aye ok June I am as keen as you to have a trip on a luxury liner’.
When Jack got to work he was sitting at his desk when Gordon came in and said ‘Hello Jack you ok because Billy the security man at the front door said you wanted to see me’.
‘Yes Gordon it’s like this I feel a bit awkward but I have something to ask of you’.
‘Oh this is going to be good as long as I have known you this is just the second time you have wanted something from me and the last time you had lost your mum remember so come on what I can do for you’.
Jack handed Gordon the letter he took it and read it through then he gave it back to Jack and said ‘I suppose you want time off is that it's Jack’.
‘That’s it Gordon and I can understand if you say no it’s not two months since I went on holiday’.
‘Well Jack I don’t mind you getting another holiday no not one bit I mean it’s free and you can't afford to pass that I mean a trip on a luxury liner,.
Now take the two weeks off Jack with my blessing it’s not often you ask for anything so good luck and if you like you can telephone from here, but first you had better phone June’.
Thanks a lot Gordon I’ll make it up to you when I get back don’t you worry’.
‘I have known you a long time and you have never let me down yet no go and enjoy yourself and give my regards to June’.
Jack went back to his office and then he had two phone calls to make the first one to June then he rang the people with the prize.
When he got in touch with the holiday people they said that ten couples had won the prize and all the ten couples had accepted the holiday. And then they went on to say that same day they would send the details and the rail tickets and the destination of where they were to pick up the boat.
The next day Jack was sitting at his desk in his office when his phone rang it was June to say that they had received by special post an envelope full of tickets and information.
When Jack got home that night he could not wait for his dinner instead he went straight to the table with the envelope on it and began to look through the sheets of paper.
June had brought his dinner from the oven and she said ‘Now come on Jack you’re like a small boy then if you must
